Reconfiguring a FISHER Console....

One of the guys on the FISHER Forum was gutting what turned out to be a 1961 Coronet with 1960 components. The Tuner (100T) was working, but the amp had some problems, and beyond his skill level. So the tuner and amp went on the Auction block. I managed to get the cabinet, WITH speakers, and the turntable. Speakers turned out to be Jensen 12" woofers, 5" mids, and 2-1/2 tweets. The Turntable is a Garrard RC88/4.

Having a 400 Receiver that doesn't have a cabinet I thought, why the hell not. Got out the measuring tape, and ended up cutting 3/4" on either side and about an inch on the top side so the 400 would fit in the opening. Had to remove the base plate to drill new attachment holes. Installed the 400, double checked the oHms at the speaker wires, and hooked it all up.

Sound, GLORIOUS SOUND!!!!


The RC88/4 needed a complete teardown and cleaning. It runs well now, but needs a new idler wheel sooner or later.

Cabinet is a 7.5 to 8 of 10. I did have to make a new enclosure panel for the right side speaker cab. It's a bit close, but will within specs FISHER put out for installing the 400 in an enclosure.

Sound is better than I expected for a console. If i didn't know better it sounds like separates. The synergy between the 400 and the Jensens is very good. And the 400 looks good in the console. I like the Front opening but I have trouble getting down low enough to see the uning dial (something to be said for being young I suppose).

Overall it turned out good, and it makes me wonder why FISHER didn't do this with the 400, 500C and or 800C.

With the 400 replacing the 100T and SA-16. The 400 Face plate is approx 1.4" wider and 1" taller than the 100T. Thinking of maybe some self stick brushed aluminum sheet cut to size of the front wood panel. or if I ever find a 100T , some polished brass sheet.

Actually, they did. In fact, the only one of Fisher's classic tubed receivers that never made it into a production console was the 500-B. And it wouldn't surprise me if there was some obscure '62 model Fisher console based around that receiver, too.

Looks nice. I may have suggested finding a way to angle the reciever upward for more convienient viewing but that would be a fair bit more difficult. I love a good console though no matter what configuration it has. I also love those RC88/4 changers. I have one, and its just cool to watch in action.

oh wow, it has the 45 adapter too. Those are not so common. Looks like it comes with a clip to mount on the changer so the 45 adapter has a home too.

The bag the mount is in is still sealed too, although there is a small tear in it.

the caps on the crossover are finally starting to open up after almost a solid week of running. It was at first kind of muddy sounding in the High's and mids. I've been running it almost 16 hours a day since putting it together. Now the High's and mids are more pronounced, but just a bit subdued. Guess it's about all I'm gonna get out of the originals. Time to hit the parts store.

To open this old thread. I sold the 400 last year. Since then it's had a 800-C in it, but came up with a TA-600. As it's the same size and era as the 500-S, I'm putting it in the cabinet. I'll have to fabricate a new faceplate for the cabinet tho. This will be the last mod I do to this cabinet.
