Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I'm back in the E-Wave business:banana:

My fourth build and I'm going to be using the same drivers as last time; JBL LE14A and B&C DE250.

I have a couple of questions...

I have been searching the thread but can't really come up with any definitive answers on recommended waveguides/crossover variations. Is the QSC waveguide a good choice (this is what I will have) or should I purchase the JBL/Pyle variant? Also, do I go with the standard LE14A crossover? I noticed that some are using this but changing a couple of resistors or even reversing polarity?

Just looking for the experiences of those that are using this combo (Dr. Beaker, RussellC I think?).
 
Yes, I looked through all of those. I didn't see anything specific to the LE14A-DE250 combination.

Should I just be using the HP crossover for the Deluxe version with the low pass for the LE14A?

When you figure it out, let me know :) Still running my LE14A-DE250s here with the original hi efficiency crossover. When I find some cabs for the QSC WGs I have in my staple I might think about upgrading.
 
I have searched, and searched and finally thought I would just ask and get the most update answer.
I am ready to order parts for the Econo-waveguide NLA Utility cabinet project.

I just have one question...has anyone found a better woofer than the stock advent, but High Efficiency (above 95db) that aren't too expensive?

I just didnt want to change this later if I could make these as efficient as possible now...if not, I will just keep it simple with the existing woofers and order parts now.

Speaking of LE14A-

I just ran an alignment in BB... 2 cubic foot, with the PR15 passive radiator. Looks like an f3 of around 35 Hz? Anyone tried the LE14 in that small of an enclosure? I ask, because I have a) a pair of rebuildable LE14s, b) a pair of nice 2 cubic foot cabinets, and c) enough parts to make a standard E-wave setup (with the LE14 lowpass, of course)...

I have experimented with several alternative high-efficiency woofers in "Flex It." 10" will slip neatly into the existing opening, and I showed how to mount them in that configuration using a split speaker ring.

With any of those, however, you're going to lose Advent's low-frequency extension, and they'll require augmentation with sub(s), not a problem if what you're building is Advent-look (or other "vintage-look" home theater and want to reach THX reference level doing that, for example.

Vintage restoration purists consider me "pariah" for popularizing this approach with EconoWave generally, but over the course of three years of building them, I and scores of others have successfully demonstrated adaptive reuse of landfill-bound vintage cabs to be a viable upgrade option.... :yes:
 
Another pair of Econo-Waveguide speakers completed. This pair uses the new Dayton 12" PA310-8 pro woofers with the Selenium D220Ti-8 driver and the Dayton H6512 waveguides in a 2 cu ft enclosure. I omitted the adjustable L-Pad for the tweeter and used a 25 ohm resistor in the series position to achieve a good balance between the woofer and tweeter.

This is a special purpose speaker intended for pro use in our house concert series. I chose the Dayton woofer because of its low cost combined with its compatibility with a relatively small ported enclosure. For my purposes light weight, compact size and tripod speaker stand mounting capability were more important than bass extension.

This woofer sounds good except for a small but noticeable peak in the 500-800 hz range. This doesn't matter for pro use because I use a dbx DriveRack PA+ digital processor/equalizer in the signal path, but for home audio use I would recommend the comparably priced Eminence Delta 12LFA instead. The Eminence requires a larger box (about 4 cu ft), but it provides greater bass extension, and I believe it's a better sounding budget priced pro woofer than the Dayton.

I use the DE250 with the JBL waveguide and the LE14A. Somewhere buried back way deep in this thread there is a specific high pass for the DE250/JBL waveguide combo. And I use the JBL LE14A low pass developed by Jackgiff.

The QSC is probably a better wg choice due to the bolt on flange vs. using an adapter on the JBL/Pyle/PE. Some measured issues have been noted using the threaded adapter but, I recall it being more pronounced on the Pyle than the JBL wg. I like the sound of mine a lot but, I have not compared it to the QSC horn.

Yes. the JBL Pyle would require adapters as they are screw on and the B&C is not. The adaptor has response problems.

I suggest the QSC, but it is unavailable right now. Parts express very likely will (hopefully) carry it in the future.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it:yes: Yes, I have used the DE250/LE14A combo before but I didn't "optimize" the aesthetics of my cab and ended up moving them out of the living room and eventually parting them out. This time around I will ensure they are attractive enough! I think the first time around I used the stock LE14A variant and changed one of the resistors in the hp to 16 ohms, if memory serves. It was terrific sounding just like that, I just wanted to check in to see if any further evolution has occurred with this combo. I'll do some more digging and see if I can find the info you refer to.

Well I happened to get a sweet deal on a pair of QSC waveguides and the DE250's so availability isn't an issue.

I think I am going to just build the cabs with the QSC wg's and make the crossovers outboard for future tweaking:smoke:

This is the first time I've used the Dayton 12" pro woofer, and it's not my favorite. I used to own a pair of three Pi speakers using the Eminence Delta 12LFA, which had a cleaner, less congested sound. I don't know whether this is because the Eminence is a better sounding woofer or because the woofer/encosure interaction is different. Otherwise they sound very good, and the tweeter sounds especially nice to my ears - no horn coloration at all. If somebody else is interested in building a budget priced high sensitivity Econo-Waveguide for home audio use I recommend using the Eminence woofer in a 3-4 cu ft enclosure instead of the Dayton Audio.

I just collected a pair of Delta 12LFA to upgrade my woofers and have a 120L (= 4.2 cu ft) enclosure to drop them in.. I'll be reporting back!
