Here is a discussion (from a swim training Blog) of a training machine that Evan developed many years ago (and continued to improve over time):

Coaches believe that on ... [Evan's] Swim Bench, swimmers move their arms in patterns identical to the various swimming strokes. It is an "exercise modality that can duplicate the swimming motion with speed." Data-hungry coaches are particularly fond of the dynamic force and strength analysis possible with the Swim Bench. A simple hookup allows coaches to get computer readouts that calculate and graph power output for every pull. Jim Richardson, women's coach at the University of Michigan, has seven Swim Benches ... When he uses the machine's variable resistance capability for rate-specific work, he'll connect the Swim Bench to a computer to learn how much force a swimmer is exerting in a certain block of time.

Well Deserved award. Evan started at Lansing Heritage and then migrated to AK where he really found a following and enjoyed helping others.

I am so pleased that there were so many deserving people nominated and out of that huge group Evan was selected. Best of Best.

Proud to be affiliated with AK, we can all be proud of what this community is.

That's my feeling too. :thmbsp: I'm pretty sure he knows how much we all appreciated him while he was here, and I'll bet if he could, he'd use the sticking-out-your-tongue smiley one last time, to show that he was never arrogant, just slightly mischievous at times. :p: :D Congrats to ya Zilch, you definitely deserve this. :beerchug:
 
I never met Zilch personally, but a brainchild of his makes beautiful music in my listening room. I'll be forever thankful. Congrats on the honor, and kudos to AK for remembering one of it's best in this fitting tribute.
 
A very fitting award and I'm sure Zilch would be humbled. Congratulations to all of the other nominees. :thmbsp:
 
I only met Zilch once at the ZilchLab.....it was back in June 2009. My new wife and I were honeymooning in the San Francisco area and Zilch was nice enough to allow me to stop by one day and spend some time with him. He had helped me design and build three sets of speakers already and a fourth set was forthcoming.

Evan Flavell was an unusual fellow. He would not allow me to have our picture taken together that day, nor tell me his real name (later used reverse lookup in the White Pages to find his name). But it didn't matter. I could tell he was geniunely pleased that we got the chance to meet and was more than glad to show me how to properly measure speaker response using Clio. I'll cherish the short time spent with him that day the rest of my life and that is why I voted for Zilch as member of the year.

With humble appreciation and great admiration-Thanks Zilch. You have taken us to new audio horizons and awareness, you deserve this award many times over. May you find much peace and many friends where you are now.

An honor very well deserved. We just don't realize just how much someone means to us until after they're gone.
 
Thanks for all the replies, I now know Zilch was much bigger than he was here at AK. Wow, 75 patents, that is just amazing. And for him to donate his knowledge and time here, helping folks he never met, makes him one of God's special creatures. I feel a bit privileged to just know who he was.
