I've done dozens of arms so far for AKers and friends as a labor of love, and every one felt it was an audible improvement.

Again, not that the original is not very good. It's just possible to make it better, for not a lot of cash outlay.

I did all of this on Paul's suggestion and I'm really happy with the results. I have a thread talking about it, there are some fairly decent pics of all but the arm damping. I'll cross link the threads for reference.

What is a simple way to align a V15 III cartridge with SAS for least distortion?
It's probably more critical than a usual ellliptical stylus.
 
Are there instructions in how to rewire the tonearm?
I think the tinned copper wires are the reason for the dull highs.
What is the part# for the Cardas wires?

Can these be modified with automatic return ?
 
Just had my SL-1200 MK2 updated by KAB with 78 rpm mod, fluid damper, Cardas tonearm rewire & RCA blackplate, and threaded record clamp. Also recently added a new dust cover and hinges.
 
I put my Goldring Elektra on the 1200 last night, sounded surprisingly good! (that cartridge has never really impressed on other TT's). Anyone tried one of the more upmarket Goldrings eg. the 1042?
 
The Technics Baerwald arc protractor won't work, the cartridge can overhang enough.
I found the Enjoy the Music protractor and will try that.
Any others that people find useful?
 
I use the technics protractor off Vinyl Engine as do at least 20 other people I know of, it works just fine, you just have to shift the cart forward in the headshell enough.
 
Hey I've got a question for the 1200 Club... I heard you can use a small drinking glass as a record weight. Should I worry about putting too much stress on the motor or bearing? How heavy is the average record weight? Thanks in advance.

I prefer using a clamp vs a weight. They are not heavy, and "clamp" the record down, via spring action, vs. holding the record down with weight.

Cool... is there a good one that you would recommend for the MK5? I don't have much spindle since I use the extra thick Technics mat.

Look for the ADC, Monster, and Orsonic brands on eBay. They come in a large funnel shape, medium funnel shape, and small doorknob shape. I use the medium funnel shape and small doorknob shape models- they are black or silver, and all made by the same company, just re-branded.

I've read (in a number of places, including KAB's website) that the SL-1200 uses the Stevenson alignment geometry. Get the Stevenson protractor from Vinyl Engine.

FWIW, I use the Technics overhang gauge and then double check with the Stevenson protractor. Works for me.

I use the Baerwald protractor and works fine. :scratch2:
