I just picked this little guy up at a charity thrift for a great price! Its in BEAUTIFUL shape, I cleaned her up, oiled it, lubed up the TT, replaced the 6BQ5's and she works beautifully. The tuner was serviced in the 70's or 80's it appears because a lot of the tubes were block letter RCA of the very last gen. A few were original "The Fisher" branded made by RCA, and I got one perfect Telefunken 12AX7, which is worth what I paid for it.

Inside, its dated Feb 26, 1958.

The TT is a Garrard RC121/4, and also has a GE VRII cartridge in it which is very cool!

The tuner has mostly ceramic caps and a few electrolytics, no wax caps which I found odd. Explains why it plays fine. I will replace some of the electrolytics and probably some of the ceramics in the signal path.

It also has what appear to be two Phillips 8" woofers in it along with the american 8" in the middle. Sounds a little boomy, I might put a P8RS in there instead.

This one was too nice to part out, its staying together, I have to find room for it somewhere :scratch2: I pulled the chassis and it looks brand new, nice and shiny with no oxidation and hardly any dust!
So is this a 61M or a 61P?

What an incredibly well preserved consolette! That's one of those confusing Series 51/61's. While it is technically a '57 model (Anniversary Series: 1937-1957), they came out late that year and spilled over into what would have normally been the '58 model year. Yours is the 61-P (Provincial) model - the wood is described in the catalog as being "fruitwood".

Here is a rundown of the '57 model year with some speculation as to why Fisher was running behind their normal schedule:

Thanks for the info, I thought that it was a provincial style! :thmbsp: I had the chassis out once to clean, I'm going to pull it tonight and replace some 'lytic bypass caps and a few ceramics in the signal path, so I will post photos.
 
Got the feet for that baby? Check the bottom and see if it has mounting places for two assemblies containing feet.
 
does not look like it ever had feet on it... no screw holes or "tan lines." I have seen other models that were similar but a little different that have legs, I think the 610 series? To answer a few questions, this one has a 62 chassis.

I just pulled it and replaced a hand full of ceramic caps and that improved the top end immensely! Cathode bypass cap for the output tubes was replaced, as well as a broken 25mfd cathode bypass cap in the phase inverter. I replaced all the caps in the phono pre with decent film caps. Here's an idea of how well this one has been cared for... I didn't even have to use de-oxit on the pots, they are all working fine, although I did shoot the mode select to be safe. I've had a few bad instances of deoxit destroying carbon wipers :sigh:

I want to see if maybe a friend still has the P8R I gave him a while back, it will definitely sound better than the one middle woofer that is in this. I hooked it up to a pair of Klipsch SF-1's in series with each other.....WOW. You would not believe the low end this iron is capable of! The built in speakers do not do this console justice. Hooking it up to my LC-1A is downright IMPRESSIVE.

Power tranny runs HOT, is this normal? I can't hold my hand on it for longer than two seconds or so after its been running for some time. Its not humming, and I brought it up on a variac, but is it possible it needs filters more than I thought originally?

You might check your line voltage and see how far it is from the original 110v it was designed for. (Mine runs 121-122 here and PTs get HOT.) I wired a bucking transformer in my console to give it 110 (108 or so, actually) and it seems to be less hot.

You can run it on your variac at 110v for a while and see how it fares.

Only replaced a handful of caps, forgot to take a before picture, but you can tell which 'lytics are new and which caps are new (red film and white film caps)

DC, I have 122 lines pretty consistently and have to put bucking x-frmrs on some of my stuff, but this one says 105-120v. Of course, I think that there isn't a whole lot of truth to that considering they didn't even have 120v lines in most places then. I have it purring along on 115v off my variac right now to see if it helps.
 
Absolutely GORGEOUS. Serial number indicates if RED's supposition is correct that it was built in JULY (G). IIRC the 51-61 did not come with legs. Yep, no legs, See Red's link above for confirmation.
