AK Design Collaborative - Insignia-Class Economy Speakers (a.k.a Indignia)

That's a charge coupled crossover. It uses twice as many caps and the battery biases the capacitors to a positive voltage.

Yep!

Also _called_ biased, due to the 9V offset created by the battery.

Actually it's 4 times as many caps of the original value. Two in parallel make twice the capacitance, then 2 of these sets of 2 in series brings it back to the original value. (PE has a quantity break in price for 10, so I had enough to do this one Charge-Coupled, and a standard set for my son's pair.)

The battery connects through 3.3M resistors to the middle of each set of 4 caps, and to the common (-) side of the input.

There are lots of descriptions and opinions here of the results of biasing the caps, mine can be best summed up as::yes:

True, but often the resultant value is hard to find. (6.2 x2 would need a 12.4 for example.) With the quantity break on the price I found it was a little cheaper to just go with parallel/series in this case.
 
ok last question; the port is so close to the back wall that it seems putting damping material on the back wall will block the port? I think i read somewhere the damping material can just be hung in the center of the enclosure? How did you guys address this?

You can put a 90 degree elbow in your port if need be. With ported enclosures, it's best to line the sides rather than to stuff.
 
well i followed the original dimensions exactly, and as you can see theyre already built. i will also add that im having quite a bit of trouble finding the necessary materials for damping

My Indignia's

Finally finished, powered by my Teac mini 2.1 system.:music:

The magnetic grilles from Parts Express don't stay on too well and the camera shows what look like spots in the truck-bed paint on the sides, but those are hard to see by eye.

You can do a 22.5 degree bend in the port tube with parts from the plumbing section. I believe I got mine at Lowe's along with a sheet of 1 inch or so fiberglass for damping. Lined the back and sides with it, hot glue to stick it to the walls I think, cannot quite remember. If not Lowe's then Home Depot but pretty sure it was Lowe's for the fiberglass sheet. See post # 720 on page 23 for a bit of a glimpse.
 
Speaking of serial numbers, I think mine are still shown as provisional...after using the speakers since Jan 2009 !! I had shown pictures in progress but maybe not the final view. Well this is a combo photo of them, grill on and off. You can see where the forstner bits did not quite line up on that speaker when making the through holes for the port, and the bend in the port tube. That's why the grille stay on !
There is a photo of them in action in the So Cal AK meet thread under Events and Happenings, they were well liked by others as well as myself. It is a good design.

Tower TWW?

This is obviously straying away from being a budget project, but I'm definitely intrigued from the comments regarding the bang-for-the-buck. I see that one or two people have considered building TW towers, but has anyone looked into building on this design to make a 5.1 system, with 2.5 towers and a center channel?
 
A center channel has been done (and is in use in my HT). I don't think anyone has done a TMM tower weather 2-way or 2.5-way. Could be a killer. You going for it? I might have to try that out.

I'd love to, but becoming a parent and only occasionally dabbling in 'full-time' employment the last few years, my brain has long since turned to mush. I wouldn't know where to begin with a 2.5 way, since I've never built one before.
