Boston Acoustics A150 Series I score

I think they're a score, anyway. Got 'em for $80 on CL last night. Only had to drive a few blocks from my office to pick them up, too! (That's a not insignificant selling point in LA right there.)

Since they are Series I they are oak veneer with the wheat grills I've been lusting after. Some minor tearing at one corner of one of the grills, which is a bit of a bummer, so I might redo the grills at some point. Some minor water damage one top of one speaker, but the wood grain is so swirly on that one that it's hard to see. One woofer was replaced with an official BA replacement five or six years ago. Surrounds are solid for now--look forward to replacing them when they need it.

So that's all the relatively minor flaws--on the plus side, I hooked them up and BLASTED a clean dollar-bin copy of Joe Jackson's Jumpin' Jive LP and it sounded fantastic! Can't wait to A/B them with my A100s.

Congrats! Nice score.

I have some A100s but they are Series III so they have a poly woofer. Still OK though. But I have heard a friend's A200s and they are really something! I'd expect the 150s to be closer to those?

My ultimate goal is to eventually score some A200s and call it a day. I've been working my way up the A series food chain since getting some A60s Series II a couple years ago.
 
I have the A100's, A150's and A200's. The A150's are a jump up from the A100's and the A200's are a little different with their wide baffle particularly in the sound stage dept.

Put a foam surround around the tweeter. The improvement in imaging is exceptional. Those wide baffles will disappear.
 
A150's are great speakers. Great imaging, not too harsh sounding, and they don't sound too boxy to me, although I haven't compared them to much.

Better than my Polk RTi8's.

I really like the A150's. They sound much better than the 100's to my ears.
I just finished collecting the entire series this week but need to refoam the 400's. The original surrounds don't last that long but it's an easy job.
 
For what it's worth I've owned a pair of A100s and A150s. I began with the A100s after a friend got a pair of 150s. We decided to do a real A/B test between them and the bottom line was that for rock music, there was virtually no difference. It was a completely different story for classical- which made some sense: The three way design of the 150 did a far better job of reproducing the midrange frequencies which is particularly critical in classical. That's not to say the 100s were poor- just that the 150s seemed to have an overall smoother response than the 100s. Within a week I traded up to the 150s. A very nice speaker. Just my 2 cents.
 
I have a pair of original A150s that I re-foamed, re-cap'ed, re-grilled, and gave the wood some love. There is something very comforting about the sound. Post restoration they look new and sound great. I think you have a keeper.
 
I recently purchased a pair of the A150's as well. I am very excited to give them a listen. Each of the woofers has a small tear approx. 1" long so I have not hooked them up yet. I have a re-foam kit on the way, I'm looking forward to my first re-foam project as well.

Any tips on re-foaming these speakers?

Where did you get the grill cloth? Can you provide a link?

In other news, I finally had reason to Refoam these recently and did, using correct surrounds. Interestingly, I noticed that both woofers were replacements, with no markings bar a small sticker saying 01/06/01, which I guess is a date code. Any idea if these would be from BA or if the are aftermarket?

The A150 woofers were identical to the A70 and A60, correct? Reason I ask is I have a pair of each that could be swap candidates for the ultimate in corrrectness if the A150s are sporting after markets.
 
A150 woofers are 10". A60 and A70 are 8", right?
I think yours have replacements from Boston if they have a date sticker on them. I made a stupid mistake back around 2000 or 2001. I threw my original A100 woofers away when I bought replacements from BA. $60 each delivered to my door. Of all of the junk I DO keep, I don't know why I pitched them. I guess I did not know about refoaming at that point.
 
Congratulations on your score. $80 is a good deal indeed. I would recommend replacing the electrolytic capacitors in the crossovers and the ferrofluid in the tweeters. I had a pair of A150's series 2 that I bought new in 1987, I stupidly gave them to a cousin about 10 years ago. I recently scored a pair of A200's original series with the SEAS tweeters and both refoamed and recapped them. Well worth the effort to revive them.Make sure to get the correct foam kits, it does make a difference.:rockon:
