2011 was a great year to be a Nick Lowe fan. Things sure worked out for the 62 year-old rocker turned songwriting role model.

We got a terrific new album called The Old Magic. I think it's perhaps his best, you decide if I'm right..

Nick's label Yep Roc not only reissued the long out of print 1979 classic Labour Of Lust but also gave vinyl treatment to The Basher's mid-late period trio of albums The Impossible Bird, Dig My Mood and The Convincer.

For those who prefer the Rockin' Nick we finally got a official live CD from Rockpile, it was worth the three decade wait.

Proving that Lowe can still shake, Yep Roc issued an new 45 containing two uptempo rockabilly songs sold at Black Friday Record Store Day. He can still ROCK you bet!

Celebrating Lowe's Freakbeat early days Cherry Red in England issued a new CD called Shy Boy compiling all the known recordings by pre Brinsley outfit Kippington Lodge, fun but destined to remain obscure no matter what kind hand fortune deals Nick.

Some band called Wilco :) covered one of his songs and had him open a long tour for them, check you-tube for a bunch of videos documenting that pairing, the performance from a couple weeks back with Mavis Staples, Nick and Wilco doing The Weight by The Band is truly amazing.

Nick Lowe also sang on lots of radio shows in 2011 including A Prairie Home Companion where he performed the song Allison which was written by some friend of his named Elvis.

Not bad eh? I mean the recording industry is dying and older artists are ignored right? Maybe they are just not doing it right. ;)

The Labour of Lust re-master

is just flat out superb,the best re master I purchased this year. I even bought Jesus of Cool too. I have most of his early stuff on vinyl and I'm glad his career has picked up. Unfortunatly for me he is one of those artists whom because of where he is musicaly I don't connect with anymore but I do listen to his early stuff now and then and @ least listen to Little Village once a year.
 
qdrone, you would really dig the Rockpile Live at Montreux CD 1980. It sounds great. Wolfgang's Vault also has several vintage energetic Dave N' Nick shows from the late 70's.

It did seem like it took forever for Nick to find a label that treated his catalog, both old and new, with the immense respect it deserved. I still own the import Demon remasters of Labour of Lust and Jesus of Cool from eons ago, and while surprisingly good even today, the Yep Rocs pretty much stomp them in every regard. :yes:

It won’t happen, of course, but I’d gladly give my soul and the souls of my entire audio club to see a Lowe/Edmunds reunion—live, in the studio, doesn’t matter. :yes: :thmbsp: :thmbsp: :thmbsp: Of course, add Bremner and Terry Williams to the equation, and the soul count goes up by about the state of Florida. :D Lowe and Edmunds’ last studio collaboration I’m aware of was Nick’s Party of One LP, which was a tremendously underrated record. I guess fans and the press had unreasonably high expectations, given the participants involved. Still, a gem in my book. :thmbsp:

Yeah, it kinda did seem like the jumping-off point for the next phase in his career. Edmunds was there to keep things hoppin’, but Nick’s songs definitely took on a more mature bent. I’ve always valued Dave as a producer—he has great touch behind the boards—and, honestly, I think Nick misses him as a colleague, even with the late-career success he’s enjoying now.

While we’re talking about PoO, guess what’s going on the box now. :music:

I picked up the same vinyl as you, love the 45 rpm pressing of the old magic and the 78 rpm RSD pressing. Love Nick Lowe.... The old magic is amazing.

I'm glad I read this thread. I didn't know about the Rockpile release, now it's on my must have list. I was lucky enough to see Nick play at The City Winery, in NYC this summer. He was in great form, and has an amazing catalog of songs to draw from.

Great post!

TOM was one of my favorite albums of the year, if not my favorite. As an old guy, I appreciate it when another old guy can still beat some meaning out of pop/rock music.
