Well I'm excited. Only paid $40 for it. :D She's a little bit beat up, but a nice wipe down will do wonders.

I'll post pics when my girlfriend gets back with the car.

I picked up a pair of Pioneer of CS-E9900 speakers off Craig's List for $20. The small amount of information I've been able to find on them hasn't really helped me.

They need to be refoamed. I'm wondering if it would be worth the $24 for the refoam kit or if I should spend that $24 elsewhere. The only thing I'm thinking is this would give me the chance to practice refoaming.

I'm just looking for a pair of speakers that will sound decent without breaking the bank. Will the Pioneers sound ok? Also, what would I need to start looking for to bring some nice low end into the equation?

nice six and a half, it deserves some good speaks for sure. I have the 50 and two 80"s and the 50 is better for sure.....Roost

My first "real" stereo system was built around the SX650 still have it as my "back up". They are a very nice mid range receiver. I have been bitten bad by the tube bug but In my opinion the 650 holds its own against the tube sound.

Search on AK for DJWOJO, he is the AK bulb guru. But I have a SX434 that i relamped with LEDs, but that receiver has the blue dial face where the LEDs work well. On the 650 the color of the LEDs may not suit your fancy depending on your taste.

Thank you for the lead Analog. I'll contact him and see what it would take to get this sucker all lit up and pretty like. Would you happen to have a guide for relamping the SX-650 with LEDs? The one nice thing about LEDs is they last FOREVER.

I picked up a pair of Cerwin-Vega RE 30s this afternoon. This setup is amazing! I am very happy. I don't think I could have done better for $200. I wasn't expecting this much bass. I'm not into much Hip Hop, but this was thumping better than the fart pipe Hondas driving around.
 
I relamped my 434 as well as a Philips 673 tuner and a Sansui 1000A with LEDs, I got them from a guy that sells on EBAY can't remember his handle at teh moment. Each unit uses different bulbs and he made direct drop in replacements for each. The only issue is the color as the white is very white and against the silver dial it may be a bit harsh but that is your call. Somewhere on AK someone posted picture of a Pioneer X5X series with the silver face and white LEDs as well as blue.

But like you said a big plus is you will never have to replace them again and no heat.
 
I had an SX650 for many years it was a good sounding receiver had it for many
years until I got an SX 980 . You should enjoy it.
 
So, I found THESE on ebay. From what I can tell, the orginal lamps are 250MA and the LEDs I linked are 300MA. Will that be a problem?

I think I'll just send the seller a message and ask him. Looks like they sell "Warm White" LEDs too. Has anyone ever tried them?
 
So, I was able to get a hold of DGWOJO. Turns out he really is the man to talk to if you need a lamp replacement. I was really impressed with the price he quoted me for an entire replacement set. Really nice and helpful to boot!

The next project will be refinishing the outside. Anyone have some information on how to make it pretty?
 
My lamps are in the mail! I will post pics as soon as I install them.

I'm thinking I want to replace the MDF case with a real hardwood case. What type of wood and stain should I use to keep the same look as the orginal?

These are not the OEM lamps that were made by/for Pioneer. They want like $6 a pop for those. The white lamps are 8v-250ma long life wedges and the lamps for the "power" and "stereo" are 8v-50ma 4.12mm.

The brightness is perfect. I am really happy with it. It's nice and warm. The "power" light in the picture looks like it's too much, but in person it's readable.

I'll PM you DGWOJO's email. He said he checks his email more often than the forums. I think you'll be really happy with what he offers you for a set of replacement lamps.

Short of building a new case from real wood, or putting wood veneer on it, you are looking at "re-covering" the old case. Peeling vinyl is common on the Pioneers. I had a nasty Sansui with bad vinyl and found a roll of "shelf" cover at a dollar store. We used to call it "contact paper" even though it never was "paper". Basically peel and stick. I had nothing to lose and it came out great!

Use the google search option here on AK to find threads from people who have done case refubishing (recovering, restoring, painting, etc...) Some of them are fantastic.

I tried that on one, and it was pretty O.K. There is quite a difference in the shelf (contact) paper/vinyl and the vinyl made for the purpose:

Do you have a link or a source for the good stuff Whatthour? I've found wood vinyl wrap for sale like you'd use for cars, but it's really expensive. $35/ft is kinda spendy.

I used some Dayton cherry vinyl from Parts Express on my SX-750 and it ended up looking really nice. Just make sure you try to leave that tan backing on (which is visible on that torn up corner on yours). That tan backing is very helpful because it's nice and smooth, unlike the wood underneath it.

That looks very nice. Good job.

But I still think vintage Pioneer , Marantz, and other receivers deserve so much more. I would of surely thought (don't call me Shirley ha) this and other forums here would be full of retired or semi-retired woodworkers with shops that would be cranking out all sorts of exotic and reinforced wood cases, solid or veneer, that would make all of the hard work and cleaning in restoring them look exceptional. But you have to have a shop and expertise. Still haven't seen anything that's been done in kingwood or cocobolo, or in all the reinforced exotics that are commonly used for pen stock, gun stock, knife stock or bowl projects.
