AK Design Collaborative - Insignia-Class Economy Speakers (a.k.a Indignia)

Hardwood baffle and veneered plywood sides/back gets my vote. :thmbsp:

Consider building several extra boxes since someone is going to ask you to build them a pair after they hear them.

Hardwood is the way to go on anything that will have any 3-D features, like the port cut out of it. Plus you can get basically any wood at this size speaker.

Another vote for for hardwood baffle and plywood cabinet.
 
Master? Ha! Don't look too close or you will see where I cut one baffle an inch too short and had to patch it back together.
 
The box is a tad bigger so maybe a hair more bass, although it wasn't really audible on the Roundignias which are .5 cuft. The XO is in the same area. I haven't worked with that tweeter. I'll bet they're pretty close in sound to Indignias. I've heard a few of Paul's designs and never been disappointed.

That is a screaming deal with pre-milled baffle and especially the free shipping.

I've been looking at that kit for awhile and I keep backing out because I have too many speakers now, if that's possible. Anyway, I whole heartedly agree that it's a screaming deal, plus, you can get the .5 cubic foot cab in a flat pack for a ridiculously low price that makes me wonder if it can even be built for what Eric is getting for it.

You guys got me thinking about this again and now I'm trying to talk myself into it.

I joined the club

I made myself a pair and I could not be happier. They are my computer speakers but since I spend most of my waking hours sitting in front of the damn thing, I figured I should have a nice pair of speakers. I decided to give them the piano black treatment, they don't look bad but I don't think they are going to hire me at Steinway any time soon.

Great job. Thanks for the photos but, I wish I could see a better shot of the finish and, particularly, the detail of the grills.

I love mine, too (#77/78) and have the parts for a second pair in the works. I need to get my baffles shipped to Ray soon!

This is a pic from another angle. You can see that the finish came out shiny but I think I should have sanded the paint with a higher grit sand paper than 1000 before applying the polyurethane. You can still see texture in the paint and it makes the finish look kind of hazy. Next time it will be better.

Well, if you're not satisfied that the finish looks perfect when viewed at a certain angle under revealing light, that's certainly your prerogative.

On the other hand, I think it looks pretty damn good! :thmbsp:
 
Frankly, I don't see how he lives with himself with a finish like that. dnp, have you considered a combination of MDF, extra glue and multiple colors of bondo as a finish? I think it looks superb.

I had some scraps of trim wood lying around, I cut and framed them for each speaker. I used some grille cloth that I had left over form another project, It was from parts express. A few minutes with the hot glue gun and they were ready to go.
 
I've kept up with the "official" builds where pics were posted here after Zilch left us. The list is in post #2. That shows 90 individual speakers.
