I found this box at a thrift store recently and it spoke to me, "I will work well for holding headshells with cartridges installed!"

I am not sure what the wood is but some Pacific Rim hardwood I think. I like the shape.
Anyway, I am not finished yet but I have the basics roughed out. The block I cut and shaped for the inside is just a piece of trim I had hanging around. It has to be shaved down a bit and notched for the headshell nibs so they will fit in deep enough so I can close the box. They also don't quite swivel up to vertical yet but a bit more sanding will fix that.
The "hinges" are 2" long pieces of welding rod that I stole from my girlfriend. I will nip them off flush when I am ready. I used the drill press to do those holes and the ones for the shells.
I'll add a bit of felt I think and give it a finish too.
