The old vertical Mitsubishis worked ok, but the tonearm was on the top- no idea how the arm stays properly aligned when mounted at the bottom- seems that the weight of the cartridge would constantly be pulling it away from the record...

Well, it looks cool, so that is a selling point. I suppose for casual listening in an office space or where sound quality does not matter it could be OK.

It is a bit pricey though. I wonder how the sound is.
 
He doesn't say how the excellent bass response of the speakers doesn't end up back in the tonearm. Novel idea though, if you look at where the pivot point of the arm is. He claims it doesn't produce skating force but I'd like to see an analysis of the geometry before I believe it.
 
No useful/practical merit to this design other than "wow...look at that...cool!" (not really). One question...how do you oil the bearing well without it all spilling out?

The vertical thing has been done before (three decades ago by Mitsubishi...and others IIRC). It didn't catch on then, and it won't catch on now.

Other than the "wow!" factor, no real usefulness.

As for saving shelf space, that's debatable.

I'll reserve judgement on the final product but it certainly has geek appeal.
 
However you look at it, appears they will have no problems funding it.

Ditch those speakers and the Tripath amp - just make a nice walnut table with (key point) a detachable headshell, and I guarantee you U Turn would be forgotten.
 
"Spring loaded tracking force is beneficial in regards to consistency of the force applied—especially on warped records."... My bull$h*t-radar just went of.. the only thing a spring would do in that case; is pull harder, causing stylus suspension collapse..
 
I like it. seeing the record turn around reminds me of a RTR, slow soothing movement. And I like the solid walnut/maple casing.

Price seems reasonable considering the cost of chinese all-plastic flimsy all-in-ones...

He does seem to acknowledge the friction on the stylus creates a skating force but doesn't do anything about it...
 
A lame attent to do something totally unnecessary and redundant. Surely if one really wants to do that one could think of even more uninteresting designs, easily.

Yep.
Spring is the worst, gravity in the middle, and electronic arm is the best.
 
I pledged for one, just for the fun of it. Something to play with. If it is actually decent than the price is not bad....but I wonder.....eh, what the heck?
