After using a little self discipline to not overpay, I found a local pair of JBL 4311B speakers on CL last night and bought them today. Got a great deal and they are in very good condition. Bought them from the original owner, well actually the owner's adult daughter. I was unable to test them prior to buying them, but they appeared in good condition and I trusted the seller to be honest about the speakers history. They had been sitting for years but the wood had been regularly oiled. As on many 4311's there is a bit of goop dripping down, but I don't want to mess them up trying to clean it off.
So far I have listened to Bruce Springsteen (The River), Frank Sinatra (Only The Lonely) and Pink Floyd (DSOM). The immediate reaction on the first song was the clarity is amazing. I can see why studios used them, you can hear every sound. On Springsteen I could hear clearly hear every instrument which gave the songs a fresh feel. Frank Sinatra sounded as I was in the bar with him signing its a quarter to three nobody in the place but you and me. DSOM was fun to hear all the cool sound effects that make it a great ride still. Those clocks will really wake you up.
I can hear what people mean when they say some people consider the 4311's a little forward, because you do hear it all. I still enjoy my OLA's a lot as they are softer/warmer and forgiving. The 4311 and OLA pair together nicely and quickly fill the room with a wall of sound. However it appears the 4311B's will be my daily driver for a long time to come.
The neighbors should be knocking on my door any minute now.
