Updates on new EMIT/EMIM Diaphragms

Graz from Apogee has received all the working and dead EMIT and EMIM types all of you have sent to him (Thanks!). Right now he is swamped with Apogee work but he says he should be able to start on the Infinity project in 3 weeks or so.

Just thought you might be wondering what the status was. As the nuns used to tell me, patience is a virtue...

Could he fix a car EMIT? I have one with a crease in the diaphragm that I'm afraid will negatively impact sound quality. Unfortunately, these things are apparently made of Unobtainium - the last pair I saw on eBay went well north of $200. I think I paid $45 for them new in the box in '97.
 
He's not repairing, he's duplicating the original diaphragms. And I doubt you want to send it to Australia anyway...

A list

Can we get a list of what model Emims/Emits he has. It would be nice to send him an Emim/Emit from the Epsilon/Sigma/Omega/Renaissance line-up of speakers. These are in demand as much as any other infinity.

Feel free to contact him at info@apogeeribbons.com regarding what he does and doesn't have. I believe he will probably start with what he has in order to determine what it will take and how much the replacements will cost, then move on to other types according to demand.
 
This is really interesting. I was literally coming over here to float an idea of me making replacement EMIMs, and someone is already doing it...! Cool. I'll get hold of him and see what he's up to.

Scary, but I have a set of (and spare diaphragms for) the four-slot EMITs!

SAM: Have you got ICARs? Or do you have a set of car Infinities with those itty-bitty EMITs?

I think those were on the Quantums, but I honestly don't remember. We had a pile of them at Central Service collecting dust, and old Bob Harpley gave me a bunch of them.

They're full-size EMIT separate tweeters. Came in their own box - probably about 1.5"x3.5". One of the cases got beat up somehow (after I had used them for years), and while I was trying to fix that, I ended up leaving a crease in the diaphragm, and I think some of the copper leads may have been broken. C02923 is on the back of each tweeter and on the Infinity box (next to the bar code), it's about the only real identifying mark on them. Set up with a set of the green quartz cone mids, they sound incredible.
 
I have sent a good and dead EMIM (from 4.5/2.5) and a dead EMIT (from 2.5). I believe someone else sent a good EMIT.
 
I sent a good EMIT (3722 diaphragm). I believe there were also others sent and received as well. Now we wait, patiently...

I got a message from Graz 2 days ago. I had offered him a few EMIM's for sacrifice a few weeks ago, but he already got what he needed.
 
Latest Update from Graz 2/16/09:

He's still swamped with pre-paid contract work, but thinks he should complete that by the end of next week. He will then have some time to devote to prototyping the new EMIT and EMIM diaphragms.

Just thought I'd keep you all up-to-date on this project - it's still a go, Graz is still interested in doing it, he just needs some free time to get started.

I don't know. Graz needs to figure out whether he can duplicate them, where to get the materials from, how much they will cost, etc. It depends upon how much time he has free from his Apogee work.
 
Ya know... it's just a trace on a Kapton diaphragm with a phenolic frame around the outside. I'm thinking I should just design one with PADS and send it to my old PCB house and see what they say.

I was just thinking of doing a similar thing with Protel ;) Just scan the diaphragm with a high res scanner and superimpose this image in your PCB editor and then overlay the traces ;)

It really is a PCB issue when you think about it but using aluminium tracks instead of copper tracks. You just have to use the right thickness of aluminium so it matches up with the resistance of the originals. Let us know how you go with your PCB guy ;)
 
Just had a long talk with Graz tonight. He has all the materials he needs to produce EMIM diaphragms except the little tabs that the speaker wires clip on to. The ones he has found so far are a different width from the stock version, and he wants to make the connections the same as stock. He is working on a vendor or two to run off some custom tabs for him, and hopes to get that problem solved in the next week or two. The rivet vendor I referred him to will be able to supply the copper rivets he needs, so that issue is solved.

He says he has identified several areas where his diaphragms can be substantially improved versus stock, such as better glue to hold the traces and more rigid material for the frame, etc., and plans to incorporate those into this design. It seems likely his diaphragms will be more of an upgrade than a replacement, which I'm all for!

Graz assures me he is committed to helping us with this and will come up with the necessary solutions to get the job done. He has paid work to complete for the next three weeks, but will have time after that to start the EMIM project, provided he can get the tabs. Keep your fingers crossed...
