Finishing my basement into a listening / entertainment area. On one wall I am building built-in bookshelves as well as a custom audio gear cabinet...from scratch. I needed to build a door that would allow air in and out but be aesthetically acceptable. Still need to do more work but here are some in-process shots.

The door to the cabinet folds so as not to take alot of space when opened, and the shelves all pull out.

Ha!! What a TON of work...I have been at it since January. So far...I've done every bit with my own sweat.
 
That looks great! Is that air ducting I see? If so, you might want to put some Dynamat on it before you close it in. That will keep down any possible vibrations and accoustic problems.
 
Speaking of the forced air run, do you plan to push any AC through that? It looks like you could gain some active cooling to the gear rack with that. If it's a return, carry on, your work looks excellent.:thmbsp:
 
Looks nice.

Even with the latticed(?) doors air circulation could be a concern. I'd suggest some venting slots/holes in the shelves; under and around where the equipment will rest and also exhaust fans(s) at the top to help pull out the rising heat.
 
That is an air supply duct...will run AC in the summer.

I designed is so there is about 2" of space between the back of each shelf and the back of the cabinet. I also installed (although its hard to see...except in the second pic) two exhaust fans at the top of the cabinet.

Re the Dynamat...I want to get some, or preferably an alternative because the stuff is ridiculously-priced,........any ideas?

Zekeman- I'm sure you'll be happy with your efforts- that's some skilled woodwork you've done there. Do you have much experience in doing this kind of thing? Have you planned any acoustical treatments for the room yet?
Hope you get it done by winter!
 
Thanks...I do as much around the house as possible...it's very gratifying....I acquired the skills in the gene pool from my Fathers side.....

I am thinking about acoustical treatments but I'm afraid I plan on building those as well...I'm trying to do this entire thing most cost effectively. I have done some research already but am not yet there in the project so it's not critical at this point. The treatments must be as unobtrusive as possible...any ideas?
 
Progress.......

A note to anyone finishing pine though...after this picture I prepped my nail holes with Minwax "Stainable" (my ass) wood filler, sanded, and stained. The area surrounding the wood filler does not accept the stain very well!! Big PITA!

Yuppers,been there, done that. I use matching color putty, now. It can be applied after staining or after final finish.
After the wood has aged, those areas that didn't accept the stain will be a lot less noticable. Nice work.
 
Yes...I just read about the puttying AFTER the stain job...I am going to sand the spots down tonight and restain them to minimize the contrast.

i hear you...
i've had same results with staining the pine. i found 'em to be very hard to evenly stain with such soft and absorbent surface.

shades of green paint on wall around the shelves will probably work best with what you have now. good luck.
