Yes, I am thinking Dual 1019.
It has plenty of space horizontally but the depth is tricky. A nice slim B&O would just drop in with inches to spare, but the 1019 might require the drawer to be modified.

The Sota is gone. It wasn't ever mine; I was just working on it.
I don't have the dimensions or the piece here now but it (from memory) is roughly 14" deep by 20" wide inside, so obviously that is lots. The available height internally is maybe 9" including the lower drawer and the 1019 takes close to 7" with a single play spindle.

No really great idea on how to repurpose something. I was thinking of doing the same thing with old chest of drawers, take out the drawers and make it a stack of shelves for audio gear, and then the turntable could go on top. Those old 50's chest or even some of the 20's and 30's art deco stuff.

Ditch the plinth, remove the drawer and install the turntable directly in the cabinet. You'd need to fit a board into the case and make a cutout in it for the table but you could use the existing plinth or a pattern. If you do that you should have room for the tall spindles.
Instead of just making the bottom drawer a "falsie", you could hinge it and make an accessory bin behind it for the extra spindles, sleds, brushes, etc.

Yes, the plan for the Dual would definitely be a custom top board so it will look "built-in". I could hinge the bottom drawer face or make a mini drawer by keeping the sides all the way but cutting half or so of the bottom away and moving the back of the drawer forward.
Obviously I would only play this with the lid up, and I don't usually use a changer spindle but I could keep one handy and only drop it in when needed, removing it when closed if clearance was an issue.
I could also make an insert for one of my AR projects or some other frankentable. For instance I have a tonearm from a Sony PS-X50 or X60 and some DD motors around.
