I cannot beleive how good is my new Ortofon Stylus 20 !!!

My Christmas present kind of ...

I put it on my almost new OM-5E

Thats in whole different ballpark in all parameter

Tracking is close to exceptional and that with only one hour and a half on it ...

Separation and depth is well great ...

It's on my Technics SL-1200Mk2 (almost stock with KAB Voltage Regulator)

On an Ortofon SH-4 Headshell


And smooth and detail at the same time


Overhang is by Technics standard but was very careful to get it at the 52 mm

And to have the Zenith dead straight not so easy, you to look with eye and try the other eye to make sure it's straight on

20 is the first quality stylus i've installed on the technics (upgraded an OM with dj-e), and i love it!:music:
 
IMO, the 20 and 30 get you into a whole 'nuther sound quality level. I've been using those for 20-odd years and keep coming back.
 
Got y first Ortofon OMB 20 on my Dual 604, great match ! :thmbsp:

(The Ortofon 2M Blue is the more up to date version.)
 
I've found the jump to the 20 level stylus to be the most noticeable and worthwhile. The 30 and 40 levels are even better but without the bang-per-buck as the jump to the 20.

I strongly advise you to never use an alcohol-based stylus cleaner on an Ortofon nude-mount as I did on an almost new OM20 and the stylus fell right out of the mounting hole. Seems the alcohol dissolved the glue that held it in place.

Cleaned my OM10 stylus with alcohol. Now I have an OM10 cantilever but no diamond.
 
That's just strange as I've cleaned my various Ortofon styli for decades using alcohol with no ill effect. I've used both denatured and isopropyl. The brush is only damp, not wet. FWIW, methanol is known to attack epoxy, but quite slowly. I've found some deposits just can't be removed with dry cleaning. Is there a wet cleaner that's known to be safe?

Quite a synergy with the 1200MK2 and and the STY-20. Might have been my favorite cartridge on that table, if not a close second to the OC9/ii.
 
Can anyone comment how an older M15e super might compare to the OM20 or 30? I believe the M15e stylus is a fine nude elliptical 5mv 20hz-20khz. The two original stylii I have look very closely like the picture jimreeves posted except the m15e stylus actually protrudes through both sides of the cantilever so much so you can clearly see a small portion of the stylus poking through the top side of the cantilever
 
It's getting better and better after each side :banana:

I have redone the VTF at exactly at 1.5 grams by floating the arms since the Technics dial is very accurate

The stylus must almost touch the surface od the record when floating about half a mm

I have the antiskating at exactly 1.5

Quite rare to have a stylus playing perfectly at it's recommend setting :music:

The Stylus 10 is not even close

I have an old OM Super 10 cart, is it possible and a benefit to buy an OM 20 stylus to replace the old stylus? I emailed Ortofon for their advice, but would value your opinions and experience.

Dd: Sure you can. All OM(B/P) & SuperOM and even the 2M bodies can be equipped with any OM/SuperOM family needle - that would just produce somewhat different flavours due to the different generator versions.

According to Ortofon's literature, all the Super OM models "have the same body, construction, and magnetic circuitry. The only difference is the interchangeable stylus unit." Even the non-Super bodies, such as the OP's OM5E, benefit greatly from the upgraded stylus assembly. A friend of mine has the Rega P1, which also came with an OM5E body, and the upgrade to the Stylus 20 has been quite noticeable and worthwhile, a much bigger improvement than the Stylus 10, which was his first upgrade after the original stylus had worn out.

Really? I've never seen a 2M without the stylus. You mean it will accept the older OM stylus and all that extra plastic is just cosmetic or better finger grip surface?
 
CH: Yup, really. It certainly looks somewhat questionable, but it works no problemo.

So, yes, the 2Ms basically still are OMs inside, just with again modified generators and in rather bulky disguise. Which is why I don't like the 2Ms all that much, as these rather seem a step back in terms of universality compared to the OMs, SuperOMs and also the 5x0(II)/VinylMasters. Or in other words: I don't need an obviously Rega-optimised design - even less, if that means trade-offs regarding usage on other arms...
