The ElectroVoice Experience ! Sp15 x 4?

Well,not quite. :D
As of today I am the proud owner of 4 count 'em 4 Electrovoice SP15's.
Unfortunately only 2 of them are PERFECT. The other 2 need a re-cone and at this point they will probably be shelved for awhile.
I couldn't buy these and not listen to them so I brought my big ugly cabs in for a mock-up. That's when my EV guru showed up with a few toys.
Namely a pair of EV SM120A mid horns,which I paired with some 1823M drivers.
He also brought a pair of EV ST350 tweets and pair of EV Sentry IV B crossovers. :scratch2: I had no intentions of hooking this stuff up today :no: but Andrew twisted my arm,and I'm glad he did.
Obviously these cabs need lots of work.Having the right stuff to fill them will provide incentive to get my butt in gear. The sounds are pretty damn good,better than I expected by far.
I did some reading on the Cornscalla and Cornscalla II last night. These cabs are almost the same size as Cornwalls.
Any way here are the preliminaries! :smoke:

used to be JBL cabs

That big port in the front will be plugged tomorrow. There is also a hole in the back baffle where the XO's used to be.I'm gonna be plugging that too and let the hole from the LE 175 act as the port. Not exactly science at this point....

Sp15

Yes, the SM120a is a real sleeper. You can usually steal them on the bay for cheap, they are really big and and very cool. Besides, they have teeth! Paired with the ST350, they provide a very smooth and diffuse sound and won't shave the eyebrows off of your face. Stephen has some tweaking to do, but its one heck of a start. Those cabs are huge, they make the SP15 look a bit lost in all that baffle! Looks to me like a new baffle would do you good, lots of holes in there. The big horns are great, I'm still dreaming of a setup like that. What's the smaller speaker hiding in the corner in the last picture?

That's one of my Aristowaves. Looks kinda small don't it ?
Yeah,new baffles are in order,but before that I want to experiment a little more.
The plan is actually to the remove the existing baffles and completely seal that side up.
Then turn them around and use the back for the front baffle as they are flush mounted.(The Backs )
I am also kicking around the idea of lightly sanding the cabs and wrapping them with 1/2'' MDF before some nice veneer. :yes:

horns and holes

How dare you clean those horns, they will never again sound the same due to the sudden lack of abstract dampening previously provided by the multiple layers of bar smoke and basement dust! Sad to see more vintage basement dust headed to the landfill, sigh. I should have informed you of this when I dropped them off, my apologies. Seriously, how do they sound with holes plugged? Looks basically like a Sentury III with different woofers. EV made Sentry IIIs that ...well LOOK similar with the woofers in a separate box with the mids/horns on top outta the box. Me thinks a BIGGER box. How do they comaparo to the Sentry III (sound wise); looks not so much, IMHO. Sound is all that matters in that regard. But thats just me. I like the 15B Sentry woofer - did you try that in your combo for a reference?

No..I followed the specs on the Telex site and the advice of a very knowledgeable AK'er / EV freak. V V V V V BTW the 15B has a smaller magnet.

Just for the sake of accuracy, it should be noted that the Sentry lll used a B15 woofer, not a 15B. The B15 Sentry woofer has a foam surround and is similar to the newer DL15W. The 15B, or EVM15B, is part of EV's musical instrument speaker lineup (bass guitar) and has a pleated surround. Two completely different woofers, although easily confused because of the similarity in model numbers. Stephen and I decided to try the EV horn combo primarily because I had them, and the crossovers, lurking in my basement. Although much tweaking is still required, it sounds pretty good. I know Stephen has some other horns he is going to try, and I am going to see what I can borrow from a friend here in Flint that runs a pro sound company. It should prove to be a fun project! What's the difference between the XO's for the Sentry IV A and the Sentry IV B :scratch2:

I am not really sure what the difference is between the A/B crossovers. You have one of each, man the phillips screwdriver and enlighten us, enquiring speaker geeks want to know, Andrew.
