So why not an SL1200 instead of a Rega P3

Don't wish to open old subjects, but am I likely to go wrong if I get an SL1200/1210 over a P3 with all the options?

Is the 1200/1210 comparable to a budget hifi deck out of the box, or would some modifications be required? Also, how would a 1200/1210 go with one of the Denon MC cartridges?

This stuff elicits all manner of ego based emotional fallout, to the Rega aficionado it's
not unlike a religion, personally I think Roy Gandy is a brilliant marketer and a bit of a pirate
I think the arms in particular are over-rated, as far as the tables go I think they're OK, but I personally prefer suspended turntables.

If I had to choose I'd go with the SL 1200 in a heartbeat

I have nothing against Rega turntables, in fact I had a P2 at one stage, just wanted something different.

As to cartridges, I was thinking of a Denon DL 160. Is that a good match?

Not sure if you're asking if the Denon is a good match for the Technics or the Rega, but regardless, the answer would be yes to either turntable / tonearm.
 
They're both fine turntables. I'd recommend listening to both of them and deciding what YOU like, sans a long and drawn out internet debate about it.

+1. The 1600MK2, 1700MK2 and 1800MK2 are elegant looking, have the same arm as the 1200MK2, have a suspended design, and are available on the used market for half the price of the typical used 1200MK2...plus, they haven't been used/abused for DJ work.

Something similar could be said for the Technics folks and that's how these threads go awry.

These aren't the only 2 tables in the world. There are other good alternatives. Pro-Ject, Music Hall, Sota, and so on.
 
I'm only thinking of new equipment. Ideally I'd like something you can set and forget, which is why either the Technics or the Rega would seem good choices as they're around the same price.

Don't think Music Hall or Sota are readily available here, being Germany/France, and Clearaudio is way over budget.

Had Pro-ject before and would never consider again unless they've fixed the noise problem.
 
Taking into consideration all the thoughts you've expressed on new/used and the other brands, this looks like a slam dunk for the 1200. And that's coming from someone with a Music Hall as his avatar.

Not really - the more I think about it the more I think the Technics would be a good choice. The thing holding me is whether it would go well with the rest of my gear, which is an Electrocompaniet Class A amp and SF Minimas/Concertos.

To what are you referring when you say "Not really"?
 
Depending upon the type of music you listen to and the rest of of your setup.
There are less expensive options to the Denon DL-160.
