I wonder why? I always thought the original stuff from the 70’s sounded pretty good.

The only Foray I made into the line was around 1980 when I had a Phase Linear TT.
No one in my Dorm (full of Audiophiles) and none of my friends through the decades (most Audiophiles) had Phase Linear. Strange. No one "disliked" it. They just didn't acquire it.
Hmmm... I may have to collect a PL System. New Years Resolution.

Maybe to gimmicky for the purists
I think maybe it was to gimmicky for audiophiles with the auto correlation preamps & other dynamic range processors.
But the original 700 amp & 2000 preamp are pretty straight forward audio designs.
I for one would love to own to 2 of the 700 amps a 4000 preamp quad heaven!

Waiting for Vintage Gear from this century
I don't see early PL gear show up much on the usual local outlets. Back in the day I would not go near it. I wanted gear that could be totally abused and got Crown. Glad I did. Might be nice to try some PL now that there are many that have gone over them to determine and eliminate the week points in these units. The 400 or 700B would be nice to try but not before they are rebuilt to be 'right'.

I really liked their big power amps, the 400 and 700B. I couldn't afford them and got a Dynaco Stereo 410 instead. I had a friend who had a 700B and a 4000 preamp. The preamp was terrible but the 700B sounded great. I think the pro audio guys compared PL to Crown for ruggedness and reliability, and it lost big time. Sound was another matter, give me one of the PL units over a DC300A any day.

Nice turntable Jim!
The PL400 and 700 are decent amps in my opinion and there are options now to upgrade them.
Back in the day when musicians tried to use them for sound reinforcement they were called Flame Linear, and we carried an extra stock of JBL and Electrovoice Horn voicxe coils just because of them for the most part. Our tech absolutely hated them. Sounded good when they worked though.

Good question to why it is not have more of a following. In the day when I was selling audio equipment in the PX I sold a few of the Series II amps.
I really liked the pre amps also.
I bought the Soundcraftsmen Amp instead of the Phase Linear.
I did like the PL 100 and bought it, this it is a Noise reduction / Compressor / Expander. I did not like the way the DBX 118 sounded.
Wish I would have got the DBX 3BX.
On a side note my old roommate from the army is going to send me his stereo he is not using it an knows I will use it.

Bob pushed the tech. I hear he had some "interesting" methods of running a business.

For me personally, Phase Linear / Carver simply does not have the sonics. "Side Show Bob" - The bells and whistles are there.. but the main event.. isn't happening.
I currently have a Carver C-4000 preamp coupled with a Carver TFM-15CB amplifier. It sounds better without the bells and whistles than it does with.
I realize there are those who swear by Bob's designs.. I'm simply not one of them. To each their own I suppose...

I've owned and repaired my fair share of PL/Carver stuff and what gets me is no matter good or bad the electronics may be the quality of the mechanics just isn't there. Imagine how easy the Magnetic Field amps would be to work on if the mechanics were different. I've repaired and own several GAS pieces and all of the screws are machine screws not sheet metal screws. All of the GAS pieces are very easy to work on, how about the PL4000 and it's relatives, I cringe at the thought of working on one of those.
