Finally my own space

Hey all,

Just wanted to show what project I am tackling currently. I have a 19 x 19 room with an open stairwell and a window and door to contend with. Since my eldest has left I have a green light to make my listening space. I was unsure if this qualified as a "Small Listening space" feel free to move it if you want moderators.

Currently I have a whole bunch of stuff to throw out. I am also moving much of what is shown to another area. Here is the first set of pictures. Pretty cringe worthy.

Sir B.

This shows the left side of the room. Where I plan on relocating my audio set up is on the right side to the door. Apologies for the crappy photos.

This is a shot of my set up to be relocated.

The bulky desk is gone. The etagere is going on craigslist, and I think the RPTV is going there as well. Most of the clutter is gonna go. Hopefully the BMU won't mind.

More to follow.:D

This is the wall where I am going to set up my turntable and components.
The big maroon couch thing is gone today.

Hey thats great ! Looks like you'll have a nice place to relax .
I was recently at a house where the guy had open walls , no doors . He covered them with heavy drapes . It seem to work just fine .
I saw the Albert King album in your bin....cool .
Rudy .

Moved some stuff around. Things are shaping up. Even the BMU likes it.

Here are a few more pictures. Apologies for the quality.

I was busy this past weekend. With a few exceptions I am all set for right now.

Here is the set up now. I may re-think a few things once I get the sweet spot dialed in. Figure out the reflection points and bass traps, some thick curtains for both the window and door.

Funny thing was after the wife saw it the first thing she said was " we need to get a flat screen for the wall above the stereo". Here are the pictures I took:

Good progress! 19 X 19 is not a small room. It is a 'good bones' type size that gives you room to optimize.

Any chance you can remove the cabinet and equipment from in between the speakers? We all do it but it is not the preferred location for equipment as it can screw up the staging.

Keep us updated on your progress. Lots of smart folks here to help you with the acoustic treatment aspect.

Cool, 9 x 19 is a good size to work with. Not concert hall size but placement, and treatments shouldn't be too difficult. Have fun!

Had my first listening session last night, much better than previous sessions. Still working on the "sweet spot", had to toss most of the Cardas Golden Rule out, putting the speakers halfway into the room is just not an option. My first impression:

Soundstage is much bigger. Everything is in better focus. Not done by a long shot but I am feeling encouraged by the improvement.

I noticed a sibilance in the vocals on some pressings, but this may be attributed to the stylus I am using , Sumiko Pearl. I swapped this one out before so for a better match I will return the Shure V-15 V with a Jico stylus. I reverted back to the Pearl after some issues with channel separation. Come to find it was the recording that was bad. FWIW Sly and the Family Stone's Greatest Hits is a mess. I have 3 versions of this now. The last version in Quad actually sounded worse than the other two pressings I had, (even though it was cleaner).

So I put the deck through the obstacle course last night, jumping all over the music spectrum.

Starting with "Solid Air" ," Born Under a Bad Sign", "Heart Like a Wheel", "Bert Jansch", "Muddy Waters Greatest Hits ","21", "Harvest" ,"Saturate Before Using", "Richard Thompson Live in Austin", "Aqualung 40th" and finally "Diamond Life", all sounded better than before, so I am happy.

The quest continues............
