Earlier today I saw a guy putting gas in his truck from a a gas can by the side of the road. Nothing I haven't seen before but in my 40+ years of driving I have never run out of gas in my cars or trucks. Lawn mowers? Of course.

So I was curious to know if you have ever run out of gas in your car, truck, or motorcycle where it left you stranded roadside and what, if anything, were the circumstances? Faulty fuel gauge, leaky fuel system, pushing your luck, stupidity, etc???? :scratch2:

Only time it ever happened to me was when an old Ford Escort of mine had sprung a leak in the fuel line. Otherwise, I've never run out of gas for the sack of running out of gas. I do not understand how it happens sans mechanical problems or a bad gauge.

Guilty but its been at least 35 years ago. Lack of funds and brains mostly.

Now days nothing ever gets parked below half a tank. With alcohol and submerged fuel pumps in the tank, it makes good sense.

Used to have an Opel 1900 with non-working fuel gauge, ran out of gas more than once. Also drove it a few weeks without a starter - fortunately it was light and very easy to push start.

1968 VW Bug. Fuel gauges in those things were mostly a guestimate. Pushed it maybe a few blocks, slightly uphill, never let it get close to empty again. I've sweated out a couple time since then, but generally I never let the car get below a quarter tank.

Great trucks. Ton of quirks though.

Yes, I agree, except this was a gas version I drove for a former job. I drove a diesel for a while too at another job. I much prefer the diesel. Also, it was a Freightliner version. I got over 20mpg sometimes, and it had plenty of power.

My dad has the Mercedes diesel. It'll cross country without missing a beat, with the dog'a cage in the back and mainly serves as mobile workshop and storage for him and his finacee's racing bicycles. Even the mileage isn't bad for its size.

Once, in my 17ft Thudercraft, never in a car. The boat was "new to me" and the gauge was botched- showed 1/4 tank and it died on the lake- tank is built in. The gauge was replaced the next day. I've owned the boat for 7 years and it's never had "mechanical" failure , knock on fibreglass.

Once, in my S10. Absolute bonehead move too. I was coming home from somewhere with a friend, and said to him as we were crossing the bridge to remind me to stop for gas at the bottom. I forgot, he forgot, until about 5 miles later when it quit in the middle of noplace at 2 AM. Luckily his sister works late and was still awake. She brought me a 2 gallon can of gas which was enough to get to a gas station.

I voted "no", but in reality, kind of. Driving a water truck on a construction job I once thought I ran out of gas. Actually I had emptied one of the two fuel tanks. Eventually I figured out how to switch over.

Once, driver's education, forgot to check fuel gauge. Maybe it shouldn't count since I only had a learner's permit.

Twice.

Once in a car where I was trusting the "Miles to Empty" computer and did not realize it froze at "50 miles 'till empty". I ran out of gas on the exit ramp to the gas station. Walked 100 yards to the station, bought a 2 gallon can and 2 gallons of gas. Put it in, drove 100 yards to the station and filled up, all the wiser.

Once on my Motorcycle. Damn thing had an issue I did not know about where the "Reserve" switch was not functioning. I was on a highway, it sputtered, I put the tank switch on "RESERVE", and nothing. Just made it up an exit ramp, miracle of miracles, there was a gas station right off the exit. Coasted in and filled up. This was in the middle of nowhere and the fact that there was a station at the top of that exit was amazing.

Only once. Dead broke, barely paying rent and bills, and ran out after a job interview.

Didn't get the job, but got a better one a week later.

Nowadays the trusty BMW tells me when it's on the reserve, and I have 10 litres left. So far the gas gauge has been reasonably accurate.

Technically once. I ran out coming into the driveway of the first fuel station coming into Roma, Queensland one night. Had to push the Hilux 4m to the bowser.
