are thay hard to install
Depends what your definition of hard is.
The more difficult part is to get the old bulbs out without damaging the red rubber booths. They are unobtanium, keep that in mind.
If you happen to damage them, then you may need to consider replacing the bulbs with LEDs.

Usually the boots in a MX1000 are in pretty good shape. They don´t crumble like the older stuff.And they are not unobtainium.
