Hello Everyone,
I am working on a QX-9900 and was wondering if anybody that has recapped one, has a complete list of all the caps. I have seen complete cap lists before but I am unable to find them now. Any help and tips would be great. Thanks. Todd

If the receiver is working properly should I just replace the caps or go ahead and replace the transistors also?

What type of caps should I use when i begin the process?
 
Yes, capacitors and selected transistors. The qx-9900 is full of transistors that we view suspiciously now, and since you are in there for the caps, might as well get the known troublemakers out. Probably will sound better too, as we have seen examples of deterioration without failure.

You will be TOLD which caps and transistors to get, we just need you to start the process and transcribe the BOM from the service manual to online. That's the time consuming part. Once THAT's done, then we start really cooking.

With the raw lists we will come up with replacement parts numbers, for both the capacitors and the transistors.

List the electrolytic capacitors (including the "cea", "cssa", "ceanl", "csza" descriptors) and transistors and diodes for the unit. By board and part number.
Just the electrolytic capacitors, the mylar, ceramic or whatever other caps don't need replacement.

I did one about 5 years ago, but don't have the list anymore. I had to make up my own.

Stock up on KSA-992's to replace all of the 2sa725 and 726's. I remember this being flooded with them. And get some KSC3503's to replace the 2sc1451's on the amp boards(2 amp boards). I didn't do the QUAD BOARDS. The 2 channels boards, amps, and power supply were enough on this one. Also there are a 747 Cargo Jet load of 2sc458's in it. They breakdown C-E and cause all kinds of problems. Replace with KSC-1845's.

Definately go over ALL of the POTS, Switches, on the front and back panels with DeOxit, MORE THAN ONCE! Do not scrimp on just cleaning the Bias and offset pots(VR's) on the amp boards. REPLACE THEM.

The Left and Right amp boards are Mirrored. You can count the caps and transistors on one then double the number.

Best way to approach it is one board at a time. Start with the POWER SUPPLY. Once the Output voltages are correct and inline, most everything will fall into place voltage wise, provided the rest is ol right now. Once you get the POWER SUPPLY done, then start at the inputs, and work your way from the input's to the output's one board at a time. IIRC a few are stacked and the one's you need to get to are on the bottom of the stack.

UNDO Wire ties, and retaining strings. DO NOT unwrap the wires from the pins!!! NEVER! If you need to remove, last resort is to de-solder the complete pin from the board. I never had to remove a pin or undo a wire. There is enough slack once you get the wire ties undone.

Get the COMPLETE Service manual (about 80 pages). Manual here Also get the addendum and compare serial #'s to see if it applies to yours.

Todd; Post up the list by board # and part # (R1-C2, etc.) along with the type (cssa, cea, etc) and your proposed replacement BEFORE purchasing. This way we can vet it for you and make sure you have most current and correct parts on the list.

Read the PIONEER TUNING FORK GUIDES (There's a sticky thread at the top of the forum that has a lot of info that is directly pertinent to this.) Why certain types, and what each does, etc. And why one type is better than another. Any tantalums you find, replace with a stacked film type (Don't worry about the ECQ-V going out of production, there will be a replacement for it 30 years down the road if needed.).

Same goes for the Transistors. List them and their replacements.

Get enough ksc1845's and ksa992's to be able to make up matching pairs of them. IIRC, There are a couple spots where you'll need to match them for gain. 10 more than the number in the unit should be plenty. you'll surpass the price cut minimums and save even more.

I think I got the list done with all the electrolytic caps, transistors, and diodes. All the values are listed in uf unless otherwise stated. One problem I had is on page 37 of the manual, there is the fm front end (W11-045) that does not have a list of components. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to find this information? Thanks for your help. Todd

Boards I NEVER mess with are TUNER Boards. Too many things to go wrong and you end up without a tuner. If the tuner is working now without problems, Make up a list of what you can with the info on the schematic and the actual board itself. Then don't do anything unless MARK THE FIXER says ok for specific parts on the FRONT END (w11-045), or the FM/AM Unit(AWE-015).

The reason for this is changing out parts on the tuner boards can change the alignment of the tuner and you loose part or all of the band(s). And getting it back in alignment takes specialized equipment, tools, and knowledg/practice/experience that most techs' don't have.

It looked a bit sparse, until I realized that it was multiple components per line, then I struggled a bit separating parts numbers (W21-003 C1, 2, 11, 12 10 10V CEA 100P 10) from capacitance..., referencing back to the manual.

You see, I normally inhale it into a spreadsheet and run it through some semi-automated processes and that format will cost me quite a bit of time adjusting before it can be inhaled, so the time to do that has to be found first.

THIS would be the most efficient for my "process":

Hello everyone,
I have been working on my replacement cap/transistor list and noticed after reviewing the posts, that nobody lists diodes for replacement. Should I worry about replacing the diodes?
In my SM I have multiple different transistors listed. Do I need to find a replacement for each one or are there just a few known bad ones that I need to concentrate on for replacement.

Sorry, I missed your revised post and it just receded into the past, dropped through the cracks...

Generally we leave the diodes alone, not many fail to begin with, so we don't worry about them.
The transistors I will have to examine along with the schematic and do some reverse engineering for finding appropriate substitutes.

I will be inhaling the data you posted into a spreadsheet and starting work on it. It will be a fair piece of work, and the clock has just only STARTED running...

edit - got it in (7:40 pm, took longer than I expected!!!) and FYI, there's a lot of parts in the list that don't need to be changed out... THAT list was quite a bit of work...

Thanks for your help. I have been going through the posts to find the appropriate part numbers for the replacement caps. I will put them in a spreadsheet and post what I come up with so you can look at it to see I made any mistakes. I am completely lost when it comes to proper transistor choices so any help that you give would be great. Thanks again. Todd
 
caps go in the spreadsheet quickly once I sort out the film cap replacements, low noise and bipolar caps (and there ARE some bipolar caps in there!!), and I can't lift your choices...
I have THAT part down to an art, but I WILL be evaluating Pioneer's voltage choices for the caps, as well as stocking levels and cost.

word - tuner will get minimal work - no transistors, diodes and only a few select caps.

I worked last night to convert the list into an excel spread sheet format so that ordering will be easier. I don't know if it will help or make your process of digesting the list harder. I also included some of the recommended part numbers that I found in other cap lists.
