I picked up a pair of Yamaha NS-550 at a thrift store for cheap. I can't find anything about them online. The set I can find online listed as the NS-550's have the ear speaker shape (Like This), but these do not. I'm trying to see if these are are custom or what exactly I have. They say Yamaha NS-550 on the front and have a 12" woofer. Thanks for the help!

Here are some pictures:

I posted this in the speakers section and they thought the Yamaha group could help out more.

So. How do they sound? They look nice. I've never heard or seen any til now.

They sound pretty good. A little bass heavy, but I expected that with the 12" woofer. Pretty clean sound. I'm going to refoam them and give them another listen soon.

I got them foamed and gave them another spin. They sound really clean. Anyone able to find any info on this particular model? Thanks!

Resurrecting this old thread as there is literally no info online about this specific Canadian made model of the NS 550.
I've added some more pics of the pair I recently found.
Any ideas why there were two models with the same model #? The other is the more common ear shaped woofer ones.

They did this with the NS-1 as well. The "modern" version is a two-way bookshelf design that looks to be pretty impressive. Still expensive on ebay.

The two different NS 550 are both vintage.
The common one you’ll find has the distinctive “ear shaped” woofer.
The ones I have are Canadian made with a normal shaped woofer.
It’s puzzling that Yamaha would have branded two sets of different speakers of the same era with the same product number.
