Puget Sound DIY Meet--August 29th

bump

Time is getting closer! :thmbsp:

We've heard from several folks (via other forums) who are anxious to bring their stuff. Should be a fun day. Remember anyone is welcome to come by, even if you don't have equipment. Looking is free.

The Puget Sound DIY Get-Together
August 29th, 2015 starting at 10am - on Mercer Island
This is not a contest as such, but rather a "run what ya brung" meet, that is open to all interested parties that would like to display, view or listen to DIY Audio equipment. The event will be held at:

The Mercer Island Congregational Church
4545 Island Crest Way
Mercer Island, WA 98040

A Map and directions may be found at: www.scn.org/scottish/maps/michurch.htm

The meet is scheduled for Saturday August 29th, 2015 starting at 10am for the public. (If you have items to display, setup starts at 9:30am or so). We ask all interested parties that have gear they would like to show to let us know ASAP, in order to know how many tables, etc. we will need. If you bring bookshelf speakers, you may want to bring speaker stands from home. Hope to see you there!

Just 3 more days till the Mercer Island meet on the 29th.
From what I've gathered, there should be some real special stuff on display.
:music:
Looking forward to coming down.

Hi All,

The "Sound DIY" Club and Pacific NorthWest Audio Society DIY Audio meet is over. It certainly was fun, with some really interesting gear and speakers. Hopefully we'll be able to get some pictures posted soon.

Best Regards,
TerryO

A few pics of the meet: I think stuff for sale.

This was a hell of a setup. Very inspiring.

What you're looking at is Gary Dahl's system. Gary also built a very nice Music Server (not pictured) that was designed by one of our members. I believe that several other members have also built that design. Gary not only designs and builds most of his own gear, but he is also the Assistant Conductor and Manager of the Bremerton Symphony Orchestra.

Quite Talented and a very nice Guy! :thmbsp:

Here's Gary's horn system. It's configured as a 4 way system as shown.

I'm testing my ability to transfer this image. This is the senior Member of our DIY Club: Dick Mueller! The HP Amp to the far left was his very first DIY Project. He bought a soldering iron and taught himself to solder and then built the Head Phone amp! It sounds very nice indeed!

This is (hopefully) a picture of Dick's Headphone set up:

The headphone amp on the far right is Rene Jaeger's recent Triode powered HP Amp. The Power Supply is directly behind the amp on a separate Chassis.

This is a close-up of Rene Jaeger's huge Class A Triode (211's) Amplifier. It is rated by Rene at about 50 watts per channel. This is only the output stage, as the huge (and very heavy) Power Supply is on a separate Chassis that was located under the table. Rene built this to power his Magnapans, which can be very demanding. Quick note: that sign on the amp is incorrect, the amp is actually 1200 volts.

The unit just on the other side of Rene's amp is a Preamplifier/Headphone Amp (the traditional pairing in the old days) making it's first appearance. It seemed to work very well and was used in the Main Lobby nearly the entire day with no complaints. Note: the power supply for this unit is also contained in an outboard unit located under the table.

These are Gary Dahl's amplifiers. They were the result of a collaboration between Gary and his Buddy, Lynn Olson. Evidently, they output around 20 very serious Watts to his Speakers (97 dB/watt). If you need loud: Oh yes, this system can do LOUD!

Here are some more speakers:

Top Inside: Howard's small three way speakers
Botton Inside is SirBird's 2 way speakers
Middle: Rene's tower speakers
Outside: Howards latest 4 way speakers

These are Dana Olson's speakers! The "Ball" on top is the home of the Mid/Treble sound. Every driver on that Ball is connected to it's very own tuned and critically damped Transmission Line! The lower Mid/woofers are also in individual enclosures. I personally liked them quite a bit!

These are Jay Hope's speakers and they sound quite nice. Dave Rosgaard designed the crossover and Jay certainly likes the sound. He is upgrading the individual components in the Crossover (especially the Inductors).

In back of them are a pair of Speaker Guru John Nail's latest efforts. John had sold most of his stock of drivers some years ago to concentrated on his Guitar Playing. Well, he's back! John's one of the really good guys in this hobby and it was nice to see him again!

Another picture of the "Lethal Voltage Tabletop System".
Rene's amp, Terry's Pre & Headphone amp and an OPPO player (Rene's I believe)

Just to round it out, here's a picture of an OPPO Deck driving my amp. The amp uses a 45 SET as a driver for the SE Solid State Output Stage. The math indicates it puts out somewhere in the area of 17 or 18 watts. Rene Jaeger and I have had many conversations about amplifiers and he knew that I liked the sound of the 45 Triode. He built this as a surprise (it was!) and it sounds great!
