M-80 refurb/repair

Listened to this amp for a few hours last night. It's definately a beast! It drove a pair of Sony SS-M7 speakers really well and the front panel is as sexy as an amp can be. Kinda reminds me of a certain Trans am that talks :)

I was going to sell this, but am having second thoughts. This is the perfect amp to drive hard speakers, that need this kind of power. the only Amp I have with this kind of power is a Parasound HCA-2205A (@240 WPC) but that's a 5 channel in one of my HT setups.

So, I had repaired the broken binding post, it's the last one on the end (channel A) but it's still kind of loose. I used super glue and glued cracked plastic. Anyone know a source for a set? It's a bank of 4 on a PC board. Terrible design IMO, but that really is the only flaw I've noticed, well, that and the corrosive glue they used. I have seen some photos where people have fabricated a panel and added 5-way posts, anyone here do that?

Thanks,
Tom

I am not sure that the M-80 display uses LCD panel.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking. I wonder how he did the connections inside?

I did it in a similar way, using bakelite:

That looks really nice amr2. I will am looking at a similar set-up for one of my amps. I am just curious if using all metal posts does increase the chance of shorting the terminals by mistake (nubie question).

I was going to use something like this:

These are good choice. I used all metal posts because it was what I had "in stock"

Thanks, that's what I needed to see. I like the use of the metal ones just from a rugged standpoint. This is a heavy arse amp, and it's not hard to tap those terminals just enough to break them.

So I have listened to this amp with 3-4 preamps and straight sources, both SS and Tube and it turns out I like it with the least matching (looking) pre that I have. An Aikido 12AU7 modified Dynaco PAS3. The only Dynaco part of this preamp is the chassis. I really thought this preamp was a disappointment after building it. I didn't like it with various tube amps, but it does sound great with this Yamaha.. Go figure. :)
Still loving the look of this Amp. I feel like David Hasselhoff ;)

It's an awesome look. You are having the same reaction I had when I saw it first. I am a big fan of analog VU meters and never tough I would ever like the LED ones, until I saw these Yamaha amps.

On a different note, the posts I am thinking on using are also metal, just not the outside. If you look at those dimensions you will realize that they are quite chunky. I really like the ones that amr2 used and those from the German audio site I posted pictures of, I am just afraid that I will be clumsy enough, or forget to turn the amp off, and somehow manage to short the terminals.

Have you tried it with the matching C-80 preamp?

No, I havent. Going to keep an eye out for one now though.

I have one that is supposedly not working. Picked it up on feabay a while back and never got around to see what is wrong with it. I have the MX / CX pair and never bothered to fix it. Do you want it?
