A few weeks ago I was finally able to land my dream speakers, the DeVore Fidelity Orangutan O/93s. I wasn't planning on buying these anytime soon, as I was out of work for the first half of the year. But a pair popped up on A'gon. I wasn't going to make an offer, because I really didn't want to spend that kind of money.

It was torturing me, so I finally made what I considered a low ball offer. I did it just to appease myself, knowing that the seller would decline and counter for more, then I'd say no and go on my merry way. But the seller accepted and I was now the owner of a new pair of speakers.

Well, how do they sound? They are the best speakers I've ever owned. They combine the great qualities of all the great speakers I've owned previously. They have the transparency of the Quad ESL-63s, the openness of the Harbeth Compact 7s and the smoothness of the DeVore Gibbon 8s and 3XLs. And they have better bass than all of them. They are a true end game speaker.

A few weeks prior to buying the O/93s, I also bought a new cartridge, the Dynavector XX2 mk.II. I'm really liking it so far. In comparison to my EMT, I would say the XX2 is not quite as smooth in the mid range, but has better highs, extracting more detail and also much deeper bass. It continues to improve as I break it in (only about 30 hours so far). It also has great synergy with the Dynavector P75 mk.III that I have.

So yeah, I'm a real happy man. I have just a few more stops on the upgrade train, then I can call it quits for a pretty long time. I'm expecting to have everything wrapped up by the new year, so stay tuned.

But enough of that. Whatta ya say? Let's boogie!

Beautiful speakers AND system! HiFi dealer nearby started carrying Devore about 6 months ago and I've been wanting to audition but am also terrified of doing something silly:D

Nicely done system!

Tasteful setup.

How do you like the XX2? I've heard it once.

How would you compare it against the other carts you've tried?

Lucky dawg! You found a used pair of Orangutans, nearby, and got them on a lowball offer. Holy smokes, man...that's badass! Congrats!

I don't speak much about modern speakers because I have a lot more exposure to vintage. But having lived with Maggies, Acoustats, bit classic Infinities, big Altecs, big JBL's, ADS, EV, Vandersteen, etc the Orangutans are the only modern speakers that stopped me in my tracks and made me say "this is serious, I need to get the hell out of here NOW". So Mike, take heed before you go for that audition at Audio Concepts.

Thanks for the compliments, fellas.

As for the cartridge, as mentioned, it extracts much more detail than my EMT and also provides a much better foundation. The EMT excelled at microdynamics, but the XX2 excels at macrodynamics. It is the fully realized potential of the 20x2L that I also owned a while back. And the great thing is, it's not even broken in yet!

Great gear, great photography, great story.
I'm really happy for you.
I feel kind of the same way.
Once the twinge of "what, nothing to hunt for" goes away, it's replaced by the knowledge that, regardless of the technology, your system stands strong.
