I recently picked-up a like new AX-596 integrated and have finally found what I have been looking for all these years, a clear, detailed and accurate sounding amp. This is my first Yamaha product and I must say that I'm very impressed. I was actually looking into the new A-S500 and all the adjectives people were using to describe it (clear and detailed) sounded exactly like what I was looking for. Then the AX-596 came along for an unbeatable price and I jumped.
One question though, in searching for info on the 'net about my new amp, I have come across several posts that state the pre-amp section in the AX-596 is a definite "weak link" and have found that bypassing it or using a separate preamp has yielded dramatic results in sound quality. That being the case, any recommendations as to what outboard pre may be a good match with this amp?
