Give me some artists that you feel are great but the average person doesn't know of.

Now, some of these artists...I'm sure...many of us music lovers have heard or are very well known to us...but, try and submit artists the average person hasn't heard of. Lets say "the average person" is a man or woman that doesn't venture too far from music that plays on the radio.

I always love to stumble across awesome music...often it's new...but other times it's been around for 50 years or more...so bring it on!

OK, I'll start...

Brad Mehldau
Ben Howard
Kenny Burrell
Andrew Bird
Bon Iver

I'd go for Tuxedomoon. Not really unheard of perhaps, but nobody I know personally has heard (of) this great band/movement.
Heard them live only a week ago, they're still the real deal!

Hedningarna-Finnish Folk with female vocals

Susan Christie-Acid Folk

Lots of great musicians already mentioned. I'll add:

Sam Phillips (the female singer-songwriter)
Brooks Williams
Ben Sollee
Abigail Washburn
Rodriguez
Johnny Winter
Allan Holdsworth

And probably Patty Griffin and Tift Merritt, though they've gotten more press.

It's a great question...I would say, in this context, the "average person" is a man or woman that doesn't venture too far from music that plays on the radio.

Oo, McCutcheon very nice

I worked on a concert with him backed by a large orchestra and choir back in 2011, he was incredibly talented, gracious, and receptive to my audio tweaks and engineering efforts.

I also mixed the show live to 2 track Maxell UD on a Sony APR-5002. Still one of my favorite live recordings.
