New to me - KR-7400.
I've been running an M2 for some time and recently mated it up with a C1. I thought the M2/C1 were wonderful.
However, the KR-7400 has blown me away. The sound is so open and beautiful compared to the separates. Especially the phono stage. It makes me wonder if the M2 and C1 maybe need a little work. For whatever reason, M2/C1 has been displaced in my LR setup by the KR-7400 despite the good reputation of the Basic series.
I guess it could just also be a synergy thing with my speakers, Norman Labs Model 10's. Whatever the reason, I'm really enjoying the KR-7400. It even almost made Queen II sound decent last night!
An interesting assessment.
Here's a thought:
Firstly Whilst utilising the phono section of the 7400, if you take the signal out from the 7400's 'tape-out' sockets and feed it into the C1/M2, you might be able to find-out whether the superiority you are hearing with the 7400 is down to the 7400's phono stage alone.Taking the signal from the 7400's tape-outs, avoids the 7400's volume control and most of its preamp section. You then use the 7400 essentially as a phono preamp and the C1/M2 as per usual.
Secondly another experiment: If the 7400 has ' Pre-out/ Main in' sockets on the rear panel, try taking the signal from the 7400's ' Pre-out' sockets into the M2, whilst still using the 7400's phono stage. This utilises the 7400's phono section/preamp section whilst isolating them from the 7400's power amp section.
Thirdly, again whilst using the phono inputs of the 7400,try using the
tape outs of the 7400, into the one of the C1's inputs (not the phono or tape inputs, use an 'aux' or 'tuner' input). When you have done that, take the signal from the C1's usual outputs (not the tape outputs) and feed that back into the 7400's 'Main-in' sockets.
By doing this, you are effectively isolating for evaluation purposes( respectively) the 7400's phono stage, preamp/phono stage combination and poweramp stage. This will give you an idea of where the 7400's strengths lie.
You might find that none of the above combinations sounds as good as the 7400 as a whole
or you might find that the strongest stage of the 7400 works
better in combination with the Basic series components.
None of what I have described can damage your any of your components. Should you try this, please post your thoughts in this thread.
