I need some serious help with dial-string

I'm working on a Sherwood S-7700. The dial-string fell off. I've never had to do these before. I had little chance of looking at how it was wound on before; now when I try it either doesn't work or...somehow...the string gets wrapped around itself on the tuning shaft or the tuner itself. I've just spent close to 3 hours doing this probably 80 times and nothing.

Can anyone offer some advice that might be helpful. I'm basically hanging in a noose on this.

Scratch that. 5 hours of fiddling with it and I got it workin nice and smooth.

I've re-lamped a half dozen various Marantz receivers and that always involves having to reinstall the dial string and get that pointer aligned in just the right spot. Sometimes it goes smooth and sometimes it just fights you. It will be better later when the frustration is a memory and you get to enjoy the results.
