I have a Garrard 401 with SME 3009 Series II Improved (detachable headshell). I am in the market for a new cartridge at anywhere from £100 to £1000 (ideally around £250 to £500 but have widened my search due to frustration).
I listen mostly to classical music with a smattering of pop and jazz. As you might guess, I like detail above all and I need something that can do a job on audiophile recent pressings as well as on rather old records.
I have read every forum post I can find and can't seem to find anything that fits the bill.
I have been told that even high compliance MCs like the Denons are either too heavy or to medium-compliance for this arm. The same goes, according to KentTeffeteller, for the Ortofon 2M Black.
The AT-150mlx is heavier and lower compliance than the 2M Black and has the added problem of brightness which seems to be criticised by lovers of classical.
I had considered the Goldring 1042 but two dealers steered me away from it and a lot of the recommendations I have read of it seem qualified.
It sounds like an old Ortofon OM 20 would have been a decent bet but they are not available (and I don't really fancy buying a stylus and a second hand cartridge or something like that - to be honest I don't much fancy changing a stylus at all).
Any thoughts would be very gratefully received.
