Gigolo of Gigolos
I never see much mention and like of technics speakers around here and there is very limited info too of them.
I own pair of technics sb7000a with all original working drivers and I love these things a lot. Been like my dream speakers and cause of their design something inside always told me they would be special. My gut feelings were right. When I scored a pair in amazing condition last month and brought them home and hooked them up to my Harman kardon hk770 power amp I was so darn shocked on how amazing they sounded. They exceeded my expectations.
During time having them I restuffed all cabs. I used high density r30 fiberglass and some fiberfill.
For the bass cabs I just cut a slab of 9" thick fiberglass and placed on the floor of the cab underneath the port section and that's it. It still had the old wool lining on the walls so I left them alone and just added the walls with just a bit of fiberfill.
Midrange cabs they still had some wool but I decided to stuff behind the midrange with fiberglass too. Made big difference.
Tweeters I took the back plate off and found no harm stuffing the cup with some fiberglass. I left the dome alone cause I already saw piece of fiberglass through the plate thing.
I then cut some felt I got from Michel's art&craft store(this stuff was bit pricey at 9 bucks a sheet) and placed it under the tweeter and midrange drivers on the cabs. Made huge difference making the drivers so very focus and coherent.
After working on them and spending time with the sb7000a I love these more and more every time I listen to them.
The only thing I know bout these speakers were they were made in Japan and was marketed for short period of time in the USA(like my Harman hk 700 series set) and were like selling for like 900 piece of there release. They never did well here though and was quickly stopped in production. I guess cause technics is cursed by "made by Panasonic" all the time and at that time Panasonic was known mostly box crap and even today they're still known for that so when technics finally makes something special but, cause of Panasonic's reputation technics automatically gets blown off which is real shame.
The bass drivers while odd ball 14" cloth woofers with rubber surrounds and cloth dust caps, seems they're similar to the jbl le14 woofers which are still available but uses foam surrounds instead and paper caps but probably closest you'll get to the originals if ever need replacement.
Midrange drivers I have no idea and tweeters too so if they ever go it'll be hard finding proper replacements.
They were supposedly computer designed and went through multiple processes in their design.
Anyhoo, that as much as I know digging around. For sound these are probably best pair of speakers I ever heard and owned. So clear, dynamic, beautiful smooth high frequency extension and beautiful smooth clean midrange. Bass is super clean and faithful. Has good extension were it's enough where you do not necessarily need a sub at all. I listen to all forms of music and they perform very exceptional in both extensions. Good with games and movies too. Has very good and coherent imaging capabilities with precision. No wonder some people loved them with the original working tweeters.
These are extremely dependent on positioning and leveling. I never had a speaker so picky on positioning. They seem to perform best being far apart as possible and toe'd in a bit. They also perform much better in a well treated room.
So...no technics love? I know there is some threads already but they're super old and not much info on any of the sb series. Hopefully this resurrection will shed more appreciation and hopefully unknown knowledge recently discovered by owners to share.
