If they are available as well, you might want to add the R-114, 115 & 117 models to your considerations.

Thanks for your recommendation

In UK but import/custom charges if reasonable isn't an issue.

Thanks for your recommendation added to list

I think in terms of vintage Luxman receivers, my choice would be the R-1050, FWIW:
http://www.thevintageknob.org/luxman-R-1050.html

but... the best stuff Lux made (and still makes!) was in the form of separates -- and, arguably, the best of the best were their vacuum tube power amplifiers.

Agreed, I would suggest looking for a nice integrated like a L-80V, and there are all sorts of nice integrated & power amps out there. I'm not sure what the market is like in Britain though. Here's some info you might want to peruse.

R-117 Effortless power that never seems to end. Very clean neutral sound. Doesn't sound like Yamaha(sterile), Marantz(slow/heavy), Pioneer/Sansui(boom, crash). Sounds like music.

Since I prefer separates and love the look of the L-100 on your first list, my three were the L-100, R-117 and R-1040.

But these are all different animals. The L-100 is maybe over budget, but a great flexible integrated amplifier. Someone mentioned the L-80V, the unit below the L-100 in the line up and a great looking champagne colored unit. 110 vs. 50 wpc if that matters. The L-110 is a 120 wpc L-100, kinda. The L85 is like the L-80 but 80 wpc. Harder to find than either the L-100 or the L-80/81.

The R-117 is considered one of the very best sounding receivers and at 160 wpc will power lots of things. Black, with a possible Achilles heal, the volume control, but it is remote controlled, you would need one to have the whole thing.

The R-1040 is the first on a line of these receivers, the 1050 is probably a better choice with 15 more wpc at 55, but the others in the line might not be as good as these two. The R-1120 can have electrical problems (or was it folks thinking 120 wpc should drive the world to killer volumes) and the later 1120a and 1070 at thought to not sound as good.

Of the three I selected, you can pick one and probably be happy if the power requirement is covered.

Me, L100/L110 and a T-110 matching tuner.

Get an L80v or L81 or if you can find one, an L85v. They will always be classics and look beautiful as well as sound superb.

The Price will be a issue on what you can Buy...

I would stay in the R-10xx series.

Agree with Blue Shadow.....L100 would fit nicely...But out of Budget. L80v if you can find on in your price range.

Your looking for Power and Sound...R-117...Again...Price Range.

So it's 1050 or L80v or R-117

Thanks yes price is an issue I shouldn't be breaking the camels back lol.

I might be able to win the 1040 with some luck.
1050 (might be more achievable) but not available as of yet.
L80v or R-117 if one arrives within EU if I will try.
I will try on the L100 anyway can't lose anything .
If I was in USA or had a transporting machine I'd fare better.

Thanks to wmgwizard Blue Shadow restorer-john for your advice.

I am presuming that Luxman is the only way to go?

My experience reaches;

L-30
L-31
L-81
L-85V
R-800
R-1050
SQ-507x

If watts aren't most important, the L30/31 and SQ-507x sound very very nice.

All these amps might have issues though, often with the switches. Ask for this when buying one or test it if you can.

PS: If you're in the UK buying from the US isn't really worthwhile, no voltage selectors and a hell of a freight price and import charges. Same goes for Japan btw. Unfortunately.

L-100
R-117
R-1050 (or higher)

I don't like the R-1040 as much as the 1050 and up. The build quality is higher with the 50 and up. But even then, there are several other models better than these. Like the L-580, or even the L-80v. The L-80v is pretty cheap and way better than contemporary receivers in my opinion.

If the black face 80's look doesn't bother you, try the 117 or even the 115. If you're like me and want to go straight for the top, just go for the L-100.

Man, just buy every Luxman you can afford. Keep the ones you like, sell the ones you like less.

I wish someone told me that when I started this hobby. I wasted a lot of time buying other stuff.

Luxman sounds better than anything else in its price range.

Luxman R-114

Luxman R-117
Luxman R-1030

Luxman R-3045

Thanks

If you had to choose 2 of the above list?

R-115 and R-117 would be great choices especially if they have the original remote control. They both have pre-outs so you could, like I do, use them as a pre-amp.

I've had a R-1040 and a R-1070, which I both really liked a lot. The 1040 was popular so I'm assuming it could be had for a relatively inexpensive price.
