Cartridge quieter after alignment?

I have a Technics 1200 m3d and an AT95e that had a bit of distortion. I decided to realign my turntable using a Technics Baerwald Arc Protractor. While I'm pretty sure the distortion is down (but still definitely present--mostly in the higher end of voices), the output is definitely quite a bit quieter. Before, my pretty loud listening volume would be around 3 or 4/10, and this same volume is around a 6 or 7/10 now. Before, even a 6/10 would be extremely loud--enough for my neighbors to ask my to turn it down.

Why might this be?

Thanks!
Michael

Although distortion can readily increase perception of loudness, seems unlikely that effect alone could explain it........dunno it's odd ! :pawprint:

I figured that might play a role, but it is really quite dramatic! Could I have messed up any of the connections? Would that have this kind of effect?

Thanks,
Michael
