Had a forehead slap moment last night (Tuner)

After all these years :smoke:

I read in Stereophile mag a review on a tuner last month maybe 2 months ago... The reviewer hooked-up the 75ohm cable antenna AND the 300ohm one also... I've never done that

If I have I cannot remember doing so

I have a pair of Rabbit-Ears only (loop removed) with a 75ohm connector that I use on my Yamaha T2 tuner... reception been good

Last night I thought 'what the hell' -- added a cheap T-type 300ohm wall antenna to the T2 - Oh Wow!!

Made a world of difference in reception strength! Stayed up late enjoying my 'new' tuner. Old dogs can learn a new trick

Never thought of that. The internal Balun transformer would allow them both to be matched and the signals should add together. They have to be aimed the same and be directional, otherwise you will get multipath.

Here is the review: http://www.stereophile.com/content/listening-141

Art Dudley, "...I connected the tuner's 75 ohm input to an attic-mounted RadioShack FM antenna, and the 300 ohm input to a common dipole..."

Also...

I usually get 15-20 on the T2 'Signal Quality' meter using rabbit ears only for station 104.9 XLNC1... this morning >40 with both connected

Wow. Can't do that with some of my tuners, but I'll be giving it a try with those that can. Of course one could have too much signal, no? Most of the stations I listen to about peg the meter as it is.

From my Ham Radio days, this makes sense. However, as was mentioned earlier you may run into multi-path issues.

If you don't, well then more power ( literally ) to you!

Well, I have a Terk antenna (the tall thin pyramid shaped one) I use in my bedroom system that has separate 75 and 300 ohm leads and I have always used both on tuners and recievers alike to great effect. In fact, if I remove one or the other, reception goes to sheet! I just stumbled into doing the double connection thing, but I think I will try it on ALL the systems!

Edit: although the Terk is SUPPOSED to be powered, I use it unpowered.

Well, heck. I always thought it was one or the other too. I'm going to try two dipoles oriented perpendicularly to get all the stations I want.
Good stuff.

I have that turnstile type fm antenna from Radio Shack, and it's been with me for about 30 years ( two homes). Two dipoles crossing at 90 degrees, love the thing!

i have one of those $9.99 fm antennas from ratshack but it was $20 by the time i bought it. i live above the san fernando valley in a small narrow canyon that has a fortunate view of signal hill. i pick up the Long Beach State jazz station-KKJZ 88.1 with great integrity most of the time except when there are weather issues.

i also pick up 89.9 kcrw including the hd 2 station which i love. its called Eclectic 24 on their internet site. all music, all the time, all kinds. eclectic just like they say. from miles davis to franz ferdinand, the black keys, or eric satie.

go on the net and listen, its fantastic.

My tuners have all had the 75 and 300 sockets and the one common between. It didn't seem right to join two different wire pairs to the same common at the same time. Is that what you have to do?

I'm in a first floor apartment an fall I have is a di-pole antenna and rabbit eats...I just tried connecting them to both the 75 ohm and 300 ohm connections.

Reception seems a little better but not spectacular. One of the FM stations I I listen to is the next town over and I can dial it in very well.

Any suggestions short of an outdoor antenna?

I have an antenna mounted indoors, but as high as I can place it in a tall garage. Here are some ideas:
