I like vintage gear — my preamp is from 2007.
Hey guys. My younger brother's birthday is one week away. As a gift I have pulled some stuff together for a small system for him. He is a trained jazz musician, pianist, but he will be listening to a large variety of music I imagine.
The main component of this system is a small Yammie CA-400 Integrated I purchased from a member here on AK. I would say that 95% of the time he will be streaming music from iTunes to an Apple Airport Express going into the amps Aux in. No DAC or anything like that for now. I think he'll probably wind up spinning some vinyl eventually... But not immediately.
I have a pair of speakers I am planning on giving him, Snell Type K's. I've listened to the combo and I think it sounds pretty good. The Yammie seems very "honest" and maybe a touch "crisp" (harsh is to strong of a word) to my ears, and the ability to adjust the Snell's tweeter pot allows me to find a nice balance.
I've searched AK some, but I'm wondering what you Yamaha guys consider classic speakers to pair with Yamaha gear? Kinda like how the Marantz guys told me that KLH 17's and Dynaco A-25's are tried and true pairings with my Marantz 1060 integrated. This is my first experience with Vintage Yamaha.
At only 22wpc suggestions for fairly efficient speakers would be good. I do have some other sets of speakers that I MIGHT let him have... But only if something that you guys mention happens to already be in my quiver of speakers.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
