EPI 120's (Epicure): Worth keeping?

I was given a pair of these early looking EPI Model 120's. They don't look like the pictures of EPI 120's I've seen in other threads.

My guess is that these are really early, or have had the tweeters and maybe even the woofers replaced?

I haven't had a chance to test them yet. Do they look like a lost cause, or should I get these things back into shape?

Here's a comparison pic

Here's a pic from a parts/repair site that looks like what I think these might have been like originally:

My guess is that someone blew a tweeter and went with an easy/cheaper alternative?

If the boxes are in good shape, and the woofers work (that's a bad re-foam), look for tweeters. They are very good speakers.

Here's the site for info: http://www.humanspeakers.com/e/epi120.htm

I have these: http://www.humanspeakers.com/e/epi-a120.htm

Basically, the same speakers. Great bass, great highs. Only thing different is the "A" has a quasi tweeter control. Just a switch to adjust the output for the tweeter. One of many EPI's I have. :D

Yes, those tweeters are replacements. Pull them out, and search for the "gold ring" EPI tweeters. Actually, any of these would give that "EPI" sound: http://www.humanspeakers.com/e/parts/002me1.htm

It would be nice to restore them to original, but substitutes could be used. Also, if you could glue the woofer surrounds better, do it. Try to get the wrinkles out of the edges. That's a terrible foam job.

Have Fun. :thmbsp:

OOPS. My Bad. Welcome to AK.

It's not a great looking refoam, but if it is actually bad is hard to determine from a picture.

Forgot to mention, the magnets fall off on those drivers. The glue they used turns brittle. I use hot-glue to fill in the gap between the magnet and the frame.

If you decide to rebuild them, do both the woofer and tweeter.. Also change the old cap out to a Poly one. Makes a big difference.
