EPI/Epicure info request

Brought home a pair of EPI 50's with the masonite tweeters in desperate need of saving.

They had all the drivers removed (all tested and working) only one cabinet had a cap in it and it was a dayton 100uf about the size of stick of dynamite.

Strangely enough I am having trouble finding the value of the intended cap for these.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

You need a Dayton 10uf. I used the 1% in mine. Also you need a 5ohm resistor to pad down the tweeter in the M50s, since the woofer is smaller than the 100's woofer.

Humanspeakers.com for info on all things EPI.

Early EPI's are wonderful speakers, and I'd love to find a pair of those baby 50's.

Meanwhile, save the dynamite - - I suspect it is a poly cap and those things don't come cheap.

What is this? EPI night. :D

I rebuilt a pair for someone. Great little speaker. A good Poly cap and better resistor really made a difference.

What I used: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-pmpc-10-10uf-250v-precision-audio-capacitor--027-244

And: http://www.parts-express.com/mills-5-ohm-12w-non-inductive-resistor--005-5

BTW. Glue both the woofer and tweeter magnets to their frames. They have a (bad) habit of falling off. I use hot-glue, and fill the gap between the magnet. Quick and easy.

Good Luck.

You might want to double check that cap to make sure it was 100 mfd and not 10.0 mfd before you order a replacement.

Oh it's a hundy. It's clearly stated and it would be the largest 10uf this size of oil cans.

Thank you for the tips! I already have planned to glue down the magnents.

One more question please. Polarity is not marked on the tweeters and with them being the older cloth inverted cones I would like to refrain from putting power to them. Even then it may be hard to surmise.

Anyone able to look thiers and help me with the proper oreintation?

Thanks in advance!

Both resistors and caps are already in the cart :)

Thank you!

Plus on the right when looking at the back. Just happen to be restoring a pair of 100V's at this time.

Insert Thank you "here"!

I picked up a pair of 100v cabinets also depending on how the 50's turn they may be next on the list.

Again, thank you!

Once you get the 100's up and running, you'll be in for a real treat.

There are things to check and do:

Replacement caps. Same as the 50's.
Once the drivers are removed, replace the gaskets.
Glue the Magnets (but you know that :D)
If the woofers need foam, get the filleted foam. Use a AA battery to center the VC. Don't cut the dustcap.
Check the terminal plate. Mine were loose. The glue lets go, and they flap.

I use my 2 pair in an old quad setup. Just outstanding.

Have Fun with your new EPI's.

Might as well add some binding posts to the cart as well. :)
The m50 aka "Mite" are great little speakers. I started grabbing them every time i came across a set , which quickly got out of hand. :). I still need to finish up couple of them . So thanks for the reminder and the inspiration to get these last few sets cleaned up and play ready.

Pretty sure it should be a 10 uF capacitor, I am a fan of Clarity PX caps and Mills resistors. You can confirm polarity of a speaker by using a D cell battery. + to + will make the driver move up slightly, + to - will make the cone or driver move down.

Good luck. Those old EPI speakers are great.

Yep got that, done it. Just was not in a hurry to try that on this very old cloth tweeter.
