Beveridge speakers

First post...been using the forum for info for a while now. Last night I made the biggest score of my life. A pair of Beveridge Model 3's and a LSR&D Leach amp. The guy even threw in a pair of Advents in their original boxes, I have not opened them yet so I don't know what model. I had no idea how rare the Beveridges are until I got them home and did a little research. I listened to them before I loaded them up in the truck, and was stunned by their sound. I have them at home now but I'm a little hesitant to connect them to my current system without knowing exactly the correct way to go about it, since they have an internal amp. What kind of signal are they designed to accept? Frankly, I'm taken aback by their rarity and I'm terrified of damaging them! The amp seems to be brand new in the original packaging! Any help or info would be appreciated.

If they are like most Bev's they dont get all that loud but are a very fine sounding speaker.
 
YOU SCORED! The company is not widely known but to stat lovers it is loved. If it has the internal power amps then you will need only to connect them to a preamp and not use a power amp.

Just to confirm; do thay have rca inputs or speaker terminals like a regular speaker? If the RCA then they do have the amps.

I'd suggest contacting the company and discussing the score with them and see if they have a manual, spec sheet, etc., and what they recommend for a startup procedure. Many stats have a recommendation to plug them in and let stand with no signal for 25 hours. Some recommend waiting a shorter period and then powering them up at a very low level for some period.
 
The Bev's do not have RCA inputs. They do have a power cord. They have speaker terminals which leads me to believe that they accept speaker level input. When I picked them up, the previous owner had them running directly off a receiver and they sounded great. I've been to the Beveridge site and I don't see any manuals there to download. Very esoteric stuff on the site but nothing as simple as how to properly hook them up.
 
Okay, the power cord is to power the power supply for the stats and you will need a receiver, integrated amp or power amp. Not sure of their age but the older nits like the KLH Nines were highly capacitive and amp selection is critical. I'd call Beverage; you know the way persons communicated before the advent of the web. They should be able to fill in the gaps as to power, etc. A safe starting point would probably be in the 50 - 60 watt range to se how they do. Stats do not increase in volume past a point but only arc. It should not be too hard to find the sweet spl range. The balance you need to look for is between average listening levels and dynamic range. Go too loud and the dynamic range constricts.

You just scored some of the best stats you can own. I have heard all the Bev's. The model 2 I believe are the best speakers I have ever heard hands down. You are very lucky. Enjoy.

If you study the above site. You will see new ones are selling for $65,000 a pair now.
 
Well, well, well. SMALL world isn't it? I bought the two non-Beveridge items ffkterry mentions in his initial post back in 2007, the Advent speakers (Bullnose still in those original boxes) and the LSR&D amp (Leach amp, also in original box).

While everyone knows the Advents, I thought I would post some pics of the Leach Amp. This thing feels like a solid piece of iron. Absolutely a rock. Bad news so far, only one channel working. Thus far, it isn't obvious how to get the thing opened up, I can see the fuses inside, just not clear enough to confirm if any blown or not.

Specs

Hello,

I don't know if this thread is still active but I will try my luck.
Would you happen to have the full specs of the Beveridge G3 speakers, the tallest ones?
It just happens that one of my customers wants to give me a pair like these with a sealed box containing a pair of new modules (!?!)
I just want to know if I have any use for these.
For that I need to know their size, weight, power needs, impedance, connectivity, etc...

It is like asking if you should take $1,000,000 as you are not sure if you know what to do with. Take them, then figure it out. It may require a rethinking of your goals and direction in the hobby but, that is not unusual anyway as they are usually ever changing.

Heck of a pair of speakers. I do not know what you do but, you must have made the guy REALLY happy. Think it as someone wanting a sports car with MG and someone throws a set of keys to a Ferrari and says it is yours, happy motoring.

I just saw them in his garage, well wrapped. Actually they look like new, very well kept. But they are huge.
I already found some friend that has a pick-up car and can help haul them.
But I still need those specs. The owner said to me something about tri-amping and i certainly don't have 3 dual channel amps to drive them. So I need to know if they can be bridged and driven by 2 monoblocs which I do have.
 
Not sure I recall a reference to a "G3", so I assume these are Model 3's. If so, they are 6.5 ft tall and there are only two drivers, the 6' tall stat and a pair of woofers (top/bottom).

They are not at all power hungry, I drive mine just fine with 120w. If you have a set of decent mono amps, they should work just fine. If the connection map near the posts is missing that shows how to bridge them for bi-amping or running with a single amp (there are 4 sets of posts, so you need the map), look up my other thread on the Beveridge Model 3 restore (below) and one of the pages has a picture of how to connect them.

Since you mention the separately boxed stats, I think these must be the ones in Texas?

Also, find out if the owner has recapped them as they will surely need it by now.

These are very special speakers. There are Model 3's circa 1980 and G3's circa 2009 when Beveridge's son ,Rick, made an attempt to revive the brand. The G3s had stereo subs as part of the system. G3 s have direct drive OTL amps where the Model 3s could be driven with just a stereo amp.

Interesting. It didn't occur to me these could be the models that Rick produced. I've not run across anyone that had a pair. Would be fantastic for someone to share some pics and listening experience of his version.

If we believe the Model 3 s to be rare the G3s would be even more scarce. The MRSP on the G3 was reputed to be $65k... Not sure how many pairs were ever sold or if that price was ever met .

I hope that the OP reports back.
 
Agreed. I would think there may be less than a handful of sets out there. And to find someone giving them away is interesting.

I did a search and see that he posted about them in one of my other Beveridge threads back in 2012. So these have not been in use at all for several years now. Very interested to find out why they would have been taken out of play and why the owner felt it necessary to purchase a backup stat for them.

I agree with you on the Model 2's. I will never hear speakers as good again, unless I get lucky and get to hear them again.
