A recent project. I was wanting efficient speakers to go with my second system, comprised of the Dynakit ST-35 tube amp I recently built, Eastern Electric Mini-Max tube preamp, Tivoli Model One tuner and Tivoli CDP. I'm very happy with the results! Measured 94+dB sensitivity @ a meter, fairly flat (for horns :D) response from 55 to 15k Hz, usable response of slightly below 50 Hz and to 17kHz. Madisound will sell you the BK-16 kits with or without tweeters/crossovers. Since I can't hear anything above 12.5kHz...why bother? Anyway, they are dynamic and very pleasing to listen to with all genres of music.

And a few more...
The wood is 11-ply Baltic Birch plywood with two coats of Zar 'Natural Teak' (fogged), four coats of nitro-celluose lacquer (sprayed) and two applications of carnuba wax. Oh BTW, these have the Fostex FF-165K (Kenaf fiber) drivers. Oops...and one of the system...

Beautiful finish on those! I just painted mine a gloss black but I can see I screwed up. Despite a few naysayers around here, I really enjoy mine.

Looks like you did a nice job on those.

What did you think of it as a kit? Good instructions/pics? Any problems on putting it together/missing parts/have to run to the hardware store for a....??

I'm with you Celt. I think these are a nice sounding speaker. Mine had the tweeters, but I liked the sound without tweeters better. Just me I'm sure.

I also really like my FE103 horn cabs which people say sound bad. I find them to be stunning when it comes to soundstage myself.

Wow. all of those look great. The stained finish on that plywood looks really nice. I've been wanting to do a set of those for some time now.

How do they sound? What's the bass response like on those things?
 
That says it all.

I do think that if you are used to conventional speakers that single-driver speakers will sound "different" when you first listen, but I really love the sound.

Most of us listen to single-driver speakers every day, nothing unusual there.
 
Most don't listen to single-driver speakers for a real listening session, usually just background noise.

OT Question....I got a pair of those BestBuy Insignia's.......Would those drivers work well in a box like that? Wouldn't mind having them as floorstanders

The Q of the Insignia drivers will be higher than the FF165K (Qts .20/Qes .21) and probably won't work well in a horn loaded enclosure.

Oh I disagree. I think a great many people are paying rapt attention to what's being presented through single-drivers. Like American Idol.

Not to mention all those people using Bose cubes.
