I need info on Atlantis speakers!

I found a pair of Atlantis 3 speakers at the thrift store today, but passed on them at my wife's pleading. I'd never heard of the Atlantis brand, but they looked to be 60s-70s vintage and incredibly well-built. Seriously, things were like tanks. The woofers were in great condition, and they had a weird inverted surround. Google isn't helping me, and Google images for "atlantis speakers -outdoor" yields one old ebay result with a thumbnail pic that is what I saw, but the auction/link is dead. Does anyone have any information or links? I really wanted to give them a listen :(

Hey -- do they have the badges? And if they do, and they have a stylized palm tree and wave, that answers a query that has shown up several times here...
But you wanted us to help you, not the reverse. I believe I have seen a pair also, and agree with the comments about construction. And I'd like you to buy them so you can tell us what they sound like. But we can't help you persuade your wife...
 
Sloppy, "Atlantis", "Harris-Atlantis" and "Atlantean" were the Store-brand Speaker for a chain called 'Team Electronics" here in the Midwest..they were I believe made in Minnesota. I have seen many differnt "flavors" of their speakers over the years in thrifts,,as you said..looking from about MId 70's on in manufacture. I have a pair of Minty 1979-1981-ish Atlantean 110 speakers that I snatched (yes I paid for the) from a thrift 3 years ago. They are a tallish-wide cabinet with not much depth,,,,,a genere of the "flat-panal-dynamic" speakers that were somewhat popular then. Mine have a 10" coated-damped woofer with a non-rotting surround, a 4" poly mid-cone with a rubber surround, and a 1" sweet-sounding dome tweeter. They have a very easy-musical sound, and have tight bass down to a bit under 50hz..my guess is mid-40's. Sorry for the long post, but I am guessing that yours are from the same company..Mine are actually the only pair from that makes that I have heard. but I have to give them a good :thmbsp:
 
Can't offer much in the regards of information. But my brother has a smaller pair of Atlantis TC-1's which are a 2-way design with an 8" woofer. He liked the sound of them better than me, but they did have a pretty good response range and power handling though I thought they were lacking a bit in the lower frequencies. They were built quite well and had both and RCA jack and screw terminals for hookups. Unfortunately my cat got stuck on something walking past them one day when the grills were off and kicked one of her back paws through the cone of one of the woofers.... :(
 
Atlantis Oracle III

I'm sure this is too late, but I thought you might like this info on the Atlantis Oracles. They were a private label speaker made for Team Electronics in the late 70's. I was a store manager in Iowa City, Iowa for Team. The speaker was designed by an engineer employed by Team, but I have forgotten his name now. They are a very high quality product. The sound was designed to emulate a speaker line called the "Quad" an esoteric British speaker line. The III was the premier version of the line having the best balance and truest sound,. The line also included the I, II, and IV, with various configurations of drivers. They were produced by a New York Company called Becker Industries, which at the time specialized in Private-label manufacturing. They cheaper lines Team carried were produced by Winona Industries in Minnesota. But don't confuse these with those. The Oracle III is a fine product. The open aray at the top expanded the sound beautifully eliminating the "baffle" effect in the high frequencies. the base was a passive radiator (one active and one passive driver). The only downsides were their size and they needed at least 75 watts per channel to drive them cleanly. But all in all they were the best speaker Team ever sold as a private label.

Atlantis speakers, not Oracles

I may have mistaken the speaker you were asking about. the Atlantis 3-A was a 3-way bookshelf, 8" bass acoustic suspension design. They were made from about 1974-78, had clean sound and nice bass. The midrange though was a bit weak. they had walnut veneer cabinets. Made by Becker Industries in New York State also.
 
The Atlantean 110 was designed and produced by Infinity Speakers, Team bought the line and sold it as a private label. The 210 had 2 10" Woofers, the 110 had 1 10" Woofer. The bass in the 110 was a bit weak. I replaced the woofers in mine with Infinity Poly woofers and it made a huge difference in the depth and the punch in the bottom end.

New member with a q. I "had" a pair of Atlantis Atlantian I speakers. Had because I lost them in my recent house fire. The insurance company needs info on replacement cost, but I need info on what to comparably replace them with. This things were tanks and sounded great. Any idesa/suggestions?

There a very interesting sounding speaker. I just got done mirroring them tonight, and posted the pictures in the Your Listening space forum.

They do not sound like anything else I have. I have them out about 3 1/2 feet from the wall, pointed directly at my listening position. They provide a Hall like type of sound. Almost like pressing a function on one of the newer receivers.

My initial response, was of surprise. But I have found them to excel with female vocals... Sorry for your loss. I hope my post helps you determine a current value. I paid more than other listings I have seen on other sites.

This is an old thread I know, but I picked up a pair of Oracle III and now I'm on the hunt for a midrange.
 
I almost scored a pair of these about a year ago. Someone beat me to them. Heard they are very nice. I have a pair of Atlantis three's that are needing foam. I'll get a pic of them. Not much info on this model out there.
