Sacd??

Hey everyone,

I just took the leap and bought an SACD player on eBay...a returned item, for $160. Retail $399.

I was wondering if anyone else has an SACD player, and more importantly, what SACDs do you recommend to buy?

This may sound pretty dumb, but get what YOU like, not simply what "sounds good" or "has cool sound effects".

There are not a whole heck of a lot out there, so just get what you like. I bought the El Cheapo $180 new in the box and think it is a fine player but plan on doing a few upgrades to hopefully get it a bit quieter and possibly help the bass a bit.
Do a bit of reading on it but I think that Sony has 2 layers so you can do 5.1 or stereo and Telarc might be just stereo. Do not hold me to that.
I have found that the detail is cleaner with the new player and the SA CDs but also found that the older CDs I owned that were 20 and 24 bit played much better too.
One thing I did was to A/B players and CDs both as I bought the Santana Abraxis and compared it with an old best of Santana.
Have fun!

Hey Chris,

I always get what I like...but as Thatch is alluding too, the titles in SACD are few and far between...and what he didn't mention, is they are slightly more costly too...so, my question was just a way to hear some folks' opinions.

Thatch, yeah, I am aware of the two types...stereo and 5.1...this player does both...even has five analog out jacks! It will be a fun new toy..can't wait!

I have a SACD player (Sony 775); I've had it for about six months.
I used to have a Sony ES model and have to say I like the SACD player better.

Even if the format dies I think I still have a decent Redbook player.

Some day I'll get the mods done on it for another few hundred.
I only listen in stereo as I don't have a multi-channel setup now and really have no interest in MC music anyway.

I have a half a dozen SACDs, Santana, James Taylor, Weather Report, Super Bass, Miles Davis KOB, Boston.
Sony only seems to put out single layer SACDs, no hybrids, but Telarc and some of the others labels make hybrids and offer an ok selection, especially classical.

I did some comparison with KOB, SACD and 24/96 , versions and found more detail and seperation of the instruments with the SACD. Also, smoother and easier to listen, especially Miles's trumphet which can be screechy at times.

Enjoy your player.

I am actually expecting this to do good things for my collection. The SACDs are around $18 but the 20 and 24 bit stuff is droping. And like I said before the older HDCD stuff sounds very nice, especially at $9. It all evens out.
Only thing I do 5ch in is movies, but I'd do Dark Side of the Moon that way. Pink Floyd set up a 360 sound system at concerts.
