Cleaning a dirty 8080??

Its all about listening
Just got an 8080 off of ebay for short money. Cost as much to ship the beast as I paid for it.
It's in used shape, dusty, etc.....and needs alot of TLC.
My question is: what's the best cleaning solution to use for the inside electronics?
Obviously strong enough for 30yrs worth of dust, but gentle enough for 30yr old SS components.
I appreciate any and all input from you guys......you've been down this road before, and your experience is priceless.

Dave, welcome to AudioKarma. The 8080 is a fine receiver. To clean it, go to the drugstore and buy a bottle of 90% Isopropyl Alcohol. Then get a cheap bristle "chip" brush and go to town. It's safe to use on almost everthing. Just keep it out of the variable tuning capacitor and the little choke cans on the tuner board.

Thanks for the info Pete (LBPete). The 8080 washed up very nice, and cost me about 3 bucks for the IPA.

I'm not a huge FM listener, but I like my classic rock station here in Boston. So the next part of this project (after a driver brd upgrd) is the FM front end.

Is it possible, and is there a procedure to do an FM alignment on a 9090/8080 without a genescope or a sweep generator
I have the basic tools.....fluke dvm, 2 channel tek o-scope, and a pretty good hp generator. Just nothing fancy.

I strongly advise that you do not attempt tuner alignment without proper knowledge and instruments. The results will be bad.
 
8080 FM alignment cost?

I had hoped that someone else might throw in their two cents on the subject, but I figure after a few days, everone is in agreement with you, and I should not fool with the front end.

So the question now is, assuming that all of the FM components in my 8080 are still solid, and no component replacement is needed, how much should a decent FM alignment cost me......on average?
 
The going rate is $60 to $100. There are a number of good techs that can do it. A couple are site sponsers. Take a look at the ads at the bottom of the page. Where are you located?

For the most part the FM section works pretty good, all things considered. It certainly doesn't look or sound like any of the components have failed.

If it tunes in and holds stations, the FM stereo light indicates stereo broadcasts and the tuning meter centers, it's probably OK. I don't know anyone in Boston but there is a good shop in Hartford.

there's stereolab (?) in cambridge, harvard square, and the service bench in norwood, both in mass, both with good results.

sorry to thread crap but i opened up mine to clean out as well for the same channel problem and it did nothing except i accidentally tripped something because all lights above the power meters are now out (was perfect before). the thing was unplugged and left to dry for weeks, maybe i loosened a wire? where are the fuses located and what do they look like?
 
Yep, those were the ones I opened the case up to flush down before the lights went out. Will try that mod though- looks promising. Also I get perfect channel playback through main-ins but not other inputs so I am almost certain the issue is within the pre-amp or dolby circuitry... which is beyond my capacity to repair. Would be grateful for any expert suggestions though.

Is that an easy task? How is that carried out? I don't care about "dolby" features, only correct working output.
 
It's not easy. It is discussed in detail in this thread. It doesn't always require this level of repair but this thread has a lot of information.

Hi LB Pete...Can you help me find the thread that addresses the 9090 lamp bypass? I did the red wire thing...nothing happened. I DID have one power meter light on, and the phono light flickered when I fiddled the swithch...then I killed all the lights. It SOUNDS fabulous...if I could just light this fat baby up.....
