Yesterday I won a DSS-9 R/L auction.
I think they are quite rare and with $500 each not very cheap.

Today I picked up the speakers 80 miles away.
I hoped the seller still had the second woofer, but he didn´t.

So I decided something unusual for me: I replaced the woofers with new not original ones.
My Hifi-Dealer sold me some Rockwood DYA 1256-68 12" Woofer with aluminium cone !!
Important for me was to use the same holes, so the woofers should have 8 holes.
Here the result: The sound is terrefic, it fits perfectly, but the originality is gone :sigh: :scratch2:

What did he do with the other woofer then? :scratch2:

I trust that you kept the one woofer in case you find a mate for it. :D :thmbsp:

I will keep that woofer. But I will not refoam it until I have a second one. If we are talking about the sound, I would not need to change anything now.

Sometimes I have to think about, if it is worth the money, when a complete new woofer is cheaper and maybe better sounding, too :scratch2:
 
Siamac, How did you handle the dual voice coil aspect of replacing the woofer? I've got the smaller DSS-7's and yes they are a rare breed to find. I almost bought a spare from someone 150 miles from me, but I just didn't have the time or money to go get them. I've thought of looking at something from Parts Express. My son cracked the cone on one of mine, but I did some patching on the back to fix it. The cones on those are very fragile to cracking.

oh, you might keep your eye open for a DSS-10, as I think they may have used the same woofer.
 
If the cone is gone it is almost impossible to get them re-coned.. It now may be impossible... The cones are long out of production. I snagged a pair of DSS-9s at a local TS that had the cones shot... EVERYONE said there was no way to EVER get them re-coned... I got on the phone and called just about every speaker repair shop in the world. Called Simply Speakers in Florida and they had 10 or 12 replacement cones left..... I sent 'em the 2 woofers and I used up 2 of them... Factory original cones... Now if they have ANY left, they may be the only place around...

The woofers look like new, great job!

For me even the fitting cones won´t help, because I just have one woofer.

The good thing for me is that the "cheap-solution" with new "not-Pioneer-woofers" sounds great :scratch2:

The replacementwoofers are driven with both wires parallel.
I just checked it, and it is working. The sound is so good, that I cannot imagine, that the original woofers could do it better.

DSS-10 and DSS-9 just have different finishes, the rest is the same.
 
I'm not a traditionalist, I don't think there is really any problem using replacement woofers. Now, mind, mids and tweets are a different story and usually shouldn't be swapped out for replacements.
 
On the same day, I bought my QUADRAL MONTAN MK-I (very high-class-speakers) I put two Visaton Replacementwoofers in.
The speakers worked and sounded perfectly for 1 1/2 years.
Then I bought some original not working woofers for $50,- + shipping. The refoaming cost me another $80,- + shipping.
Then I build in the original woofers and had to realize, that there was no difference in sound.

To have my DSS-9 finished with original woofers, could cost me another $200,- to $300,-.
And the sound will be the same. :scratch2:
 
Good points indeed. When the time comes to fix them up, I think I'll just pursue a nice replacment from Parts Express or some other outfit.

There is no difference in sound in normal volumes.
But when I test them very loud with full bass, the original Pioneer woofer is clippping sooner. The new woofer can handle more bass (volume) :scratch2:
 
Nice looking speakers! The woofer looks like its a carbon fiber one - perhaps a second generation carbon fiber HPM woofer would be a direct replacement?
 
HPM-Woofers cannot be used as replacement.
When you look at the pics, the whole chassis is in one piece. There is no extra surround ring.
The dimension is much bigger then any othe HPM or CS 12" chassis.

Looks a little like SONY SS-G7 :yes:

Pioneer Vintage components have be in the original condition.
