Hello. what can you tell me about BSR DR-1030 speakers? I just bought a 9/10 pair from salvation army for $29.95. No rips cabinets awesome shape, hope they work..... :scratch2:

Here are some general comments on BSR gear:
* They were mass market items starting with turntables in the 60s. By the 70s, the BSR brand name was on many items all targeting the mass market consumer.
* There were some attempts to go upscale with their turntables (the Model 810 was one example of a convoluted and complex attempt to make a high-end table).
* Outside of that, this gear was found in KMarts and other discount marketeers. Some local audio dealers would carry the tables and some electronics to cater to the lower end of their clients as the profit margins were better than the Pioneer, Marantz and Yamaha gear.
This brand name had many hundreds of models of electronics, speakers, equalizers, etc attached to it over the decades.

Let me interject here on the BSR speaker conversation. I'm about to pick up a pair of BSR large floor speeakers. Model DR 1550R. These are 5 way speakers with a woofer and tweeter firing straight up and the remaining three mounted in the usual fashion. Looks to be 12 or 15" woofers. Cabinets are not fine furniture but my wife will have to learn to get along with them.
Anybody had any experience with these?

Have have had one of the DR 1550R's, and the three-way "Thunderlizards"
over the years.....They play LOUD, but not much in the accuracy dept......
On the DR 1550R's, I replaced the woofers, and top firing mid with Pioneer
speakers, and the 8" front mid with some sealed back mids off of epay, they
sounded better, but NOT great.....Need some decent xovers, perhaps you
might find some Daytons from PE......Mine were pristine, paid 20.$............

They were sold in the DAK mail-order catalog in the mid 80's. I remember getting those catalogs and wondering about the company's sometimes outlandish claims about their products.
I have never heard a pair, so I cannot judge their sound. If it sounds good to you, that's all that matters. :thmbsp:
A roommate of mine had a pair of those. They went pretty loud. Not sure what he drove them with anymore. Woofers were yellow/off white in color with black surround and dust cover. I had the BSR (from DAK) 15" passive sub which used the same woofer. The sub is long gone as is the roommate.

I found a pair of the DR 1550R today in the Goodwill in Tempe. They wanted $150. The cabs were solid and they needed refoamed but they looked good. Welp good thing I passed them up.

DR 1550R from DAK catalog - these things are huge, heavy, not particularly beautiful, but they are LOUD - when i got them, I put them on the front porch of my folk's house, cranked them & started walking away to see how far i could hear them well - i was half way down the lane, which is 3/10 mile long & could still hear them very well (they live on a farm).
As i remember, i might have paid around $150 for these things in the early to mid 1980's - and they are now relegated to the man cave, where i rarely turn it up that loud - I'll likely get rid of them when space becomes an issue - or maybe my teenage sons will need something that really cranks for a party - all for a good cause.

I got all those DAK catalogs, there sure were some pretty outlandish claims! I bought a pair of the large speakers (don't remember the model numbers but they have a 15" woofer and a mid and tweet plus a mid and tweet which point up. I first got them because I was enthralled by how loud they would play, and that was pretty loud (driving them with an old McIntosh 2105) and I still use them. I guess I am not as sophisticated as some people as I have been using these for almost 30 years and they seem OK to me. I have not really auditioned better large speakers in quite some time; I might be taking these to the dump if I do, though until then they seem OK to me. I mostly like classical music and some jazz.
A local junk store has a pair for $30, which pair is missing the surrounds from all but the woofers. I am sorely tempted to offer $20 and hope they work!

I bought a pair from DAK while in high school. They played loud but sounded crappy and were pretty cheaply made, of super cheap components. At the time, I was just getting into audio equipment and didn't know any better. Out of curiosity, I took them apart one time and there was a little bit of fiberglass padding and super small magnets on the drivers. I sold them to an uncle and bought some Cerwin Vegas that cost several times the price but for playing loud, they could eat the DAK BSR speakers for lunch. I think the magnet on one the 15" CV weighed more than all the BSR drivers combined. Still, they were fun for a first pair of speakers.
