Pioneer Catalog 1976/77 : High Res Scans

Strange, yet oddly normal
I recently bought a Pioneer catalog covering the 1976/77 model ranges and thought that it would be a good idea to post it on AK in it's entireity (all 40 A4 pages).

This is going to take me quite some time as I'm scanning the pictures in high resolution and then editing them to remove as many blemishes as I can. Please be patient!!

Because of the resultant file sizes (just under 1Mb per page, resolution 3300 x 2450 pixels) I'm having to use Photobucket to host the images instead of AK's server.

Edit : Finally finished editing all the scans on 10-04-2007, so it took 4 months to complete. :thmbsp:

Any chance of Page 31 - Headphones Introduction and Monitor 10 Headphones??? :thmbsp: Haven`t got much info on these and I have 2 pairs of them - they are fantastic headphones with superb build quality!! :yes: Would love a hi-res of them with info etc!!!!

You, know, I've been looking at the listing of turntables and there are some that I thought would be there. According to the component database the PL-550 and 570 were introduced in 1976, but they're not in this catalog. And there are no turntable specs in this catalog. :scratch2:

This brought to mind a question I have had but always forget to ask, and it regards the "LX" series receivers. On the rare instances where I have seen this series, I was always intrigued, if only for the fact that they have more buttons.

I am assuming this is a European market series, and it features the LW band in addition to AM and FM.

Can someone elaborate on this? What is the LW band, is it still used, and if so, how does it compare to the others? Does it have a specific broadcasting purpose? Any info appreciated!

LW = Long Wave = around 150KHz to 285KHz = 1000m to 2000m band.

LW is still used in the UK, BBC "Radio 4" is broadcast on 198kHz. Sound quality is pretty basic and is only really suitable for speech.

One of the benefits of LW is that the signal has a considerable range and is little effected by hills and buildings (unlike FM). The attached thumbnail gives details of the three LW transmitters which cover the whole of the UK - it can be seen that the single 500kW transmitter does most of the work.

Because of the range, the BBC transmit regular "shipping forecasts" on Radio 4 - additional information can be found on Wikipedia here, from where the following extract is taken :
"The reason for choosing BBC Radio 4 for the Shipping Forecast is not simply because it is a speech-based channel, but also because it broadcasts via longwave on 198 kHz as well as FM, and the longwave signal can be received clearly at sea all around the British Isles. For this reason, until 1978 the Shipping Forecast was broadcast on the BBC Light Programme and then BBC Radio 2, as they broadcast on longwave (200 kHz) and at those times the BBC Home Service and Radio 4 were on medium wave. The frequency changed to 198kHz in 1989 when frequencies were standardised across Europe."

Also attached is a BBC fact-sheet giving information about "analog radio" - this also contains useful information for solving typical reception problems.

I imagine that this means that if I were to procure one of these LW receivers to add to my collection, the LW band would not do me any good out here in the middle of North America.
 
Pioneer Catalog 1976/77 : Scans Completed

Hello fellow Silver Pioneer fanatics, I have finally completed scanning all of the 1976-77 Pioneer catalog. :banana::banana::banana:

Looking back at my original post I see that it took me near enough 4 months to do - scanning was relatively quick and easy (half a day), it was the detailed editing and tidying up that took all the time.

Anyway, hope you all enjoy looking at the results. (See O.P. for links).

Thanks very much for your time & effort, 240 Volts! :thmbsp: I just happened to be looking at this thread as you finished, as I just saw a very clean SX-1250 yesterday, the first I recall seeing in person. It was hooked up to some cheap speakers, but still sounded very impressive. :smoke:

To the rest of you Pio enthusiasts, I have agreed with Richard that I will convert his images into one PDF file for those that prefer a single file to individual JPGs: In fact, I will make two PDF's - one hi-res (approx 40 Mb) and one lo-res (approx 4 Mb), post them to the Pioneer Scan Database (linked to from my signature), and let you all know in that thread when I have done so.

I converted Richard's (240 Volts) images into two single-file documents, a high-resolution (38 Mb) and a low-resolution (12 Mb) version, and posted them to the AK Pioneer Manual Database.

The brochure contains photos, info and data on "classics" such SA-9900, C3/M3, SPECs, SX-1250, CT-F9191, and much else. It is full color and absolutely stunning, so enjoy it!
