These are fresh off the assembly line floor (aka garage). They are a transmission line design somewhat like the Madisound Thor kit only with a grand less in driver cost. These are built from Peerless drivers (6.5"/1" soft dome) that were used in a production model that never made it to market at a company I used to work for (marketing guys asked for a full HT system and when we provided it they decided not to enter that market). They are my new mains and I'm really happy.

"There's no replacement for displacement" but these make more bass than a 6.5 has any right to. I need to do some moving around to get imaging nailed down and that's a chore with 6 pairs of speakers in that room but we'll see.

There is some goop on one of the cones that needs cleaning but I was impatient about listening so it'll wait.

I'm contemplating grills and have some prototypes in process but I'm not sure I want to put holes in the boxes for mounting.

Yup. 5"x7" out the back. Note the lack of terminals. The bottom is recessed into the box about 2" and there are terminal cups in the bottom. If you look at the bottom of the back there's a "mouse hole" there. I thought it was a bit cleaner looking that way.

Real clean looking, nice job on building those speakers. I like that recessed cup & mouse hole to the terminals idea.
 
I had no idea you were building those. From the looks of the toys on the floor, maybe you should add grilles similar to the black speaks next to them.

Is that a water bottle on the floor too?

very nice looking. as for the grills have you considered magnets a la the klipsch kg 3.5? One of the nicer grill attachments I've come across

Nonetheless, I'd be remiss if I didn't chime in and note that they do, indeed, look bitchen. I am, as you must also be, a sucker for that TL-loaded bass.

The grills on the big black towers are actually racks for cooling cookies. :D They are there for impact protection from objects like pirate swords and soccer balls. Good eye on the Spiderman water bottle. The boys (5 and 3.5) had just come in from a tough session of killing badguys, chasing frogs, and fixing dinner (see pic). They needed a drink.

That's the good speaker. The other one was a bit of an experiment with different veneering techniques and has a few ripples. Hence, it's not in the glamour shot.

The tweeter is Peerless 811978. It's also a custom job to go with the 6.5's. Very similar to the 811830 that's out and about. (note: story with bad ending for speakers, not for the faint of heart) We were tasked with making an HT setup and spec'd these Peerless units in a sealed MTM using Cubicon tubes. After development the marketing guys decided that we didn't need to be in the HT business and scrapped the line. We had about 150 woofers and 100 tweeters just sitting around a plant in Texas. On several occasions I ordered up sets of drivers for various projects, and several for myself and some co-workers. The company was bought and the new owners had no desire for those speakers that were left. My last trip down to the plant I found the woofers stacked on a pallet outside. Someone was conscientious enough to put a tarp over them but they were still rainsoaked and ruined. They are shielded and the cups over the magnets were literally filled with water. I dug around the middle of the stack and found a few to salvage. What I now have is the pair in this thread, the black towers next to them (sealed box with side-firing 10" on the bottom) and one pair of the originals that I use for rears on the HT. Sad day when I found those things. I never did find the rest of the tweeters.

Unfortunately I didn't think about it until the veneer was on. If I was going to be slick like that I'd have embedded the magnet (the speaker part) below the veneer so it didn't show. To do it now I'd have to recess the magnets and leave them showing and since I'm much better at just drilling a hole I'll probably just go with the conventional mounts.

mhardy: yup! :yes: Back in college I had a TA that built a set using Dynaudio drivers with an 8" (21W-54) in a TL. To this day still one of the best sounding speakers I've heard.

Very nice work, you might consider some threaded stud pins. Basicly screws that will hold the woofer frames in place that have a 1/4" stud above that you can attatch your grill to.
Would hate to see you put any more holes in those nice cabs!

See, there's the difference between you and me.

Zilch'd glue some magnets to the grilles and pound roofing nails in his cabinets for them to grab.

Only THEN would he discover he'd used stainless nails.... :p:
 
Update: I'm still messing with grills. I put one together and did a temp mounting job to see how I like the look. I just pulled the top 2 screws on the top woofer, put in about 7 washers and screwed it back in so there's about 1/2" of washer to hang the grill on.

Anyway, I'm partial to the look with the grills. Opinions?

As I recall, you have more speakers than sense as it is! Of course you can see bits of 4 other pairs in those 2 pictures above so I'm in the same boat. Tell you what, I'll swap you a pair for the Sequerras straight up. :yes:
