Leak 3090 loudspeakers?

This morning I ended got a return email from a collector in London that seemed to know as much or more than anybody about these big Leaks. He is going to send me some literature and more info regarding these. They are spec'ed at 100 w/ch or so power handling with a @6 Ohm overall rating. Apparently they dip down into the 4 Ohm range but the gentleman I spoke with said he was driving his easily with a 10 w/ch valve amp so they may be right down my alley.
I really did not know anything about Leak other than I would like to find on of their tube amps and I have read about, but never heard the original Leak Sandwich speaker. I was expecting to find the 3090's to be of similar size but they turned out to be monsters.
They stand @48" in height with the upper enclosure installed to the bass cabinet. Maybe 24" wide and about 14-16" deep. They got tucked into the garage pretty quickly upon arrival at my home for marital security reasons
112 lbs total weight each. The damn things have "rack" handles and wheel rollers on the bottom of the cabs. Im not sure yet but they look to be standard issue. Nice walnut veneered cabinets and the grilles are in pretty darn good shape.
4-way driver complement includes a 13" styro cone woofer in its own enclosure, The upper unit houses a @6" mid driver, @4" mid tweeter and a electrostatic "super tweeter".
Honestly, I wasn't looking for any more complete speakers but this pair sounded too interesting to pass up a look. They should be up and running tonight or tomorrow so I will post up some pics.

His ad was not to descriptive and he didn't specify what he was looking for price wise. I really resopnded out of curiosity more than real interest at the time. He called me when I was almost in Belle Plaine but I figured that I had some calls to make in Cambridge anyway so I might as well head that direction. When he described the speakers over the phone I was shocked to hear the size of them. At that point, I just had to see them.

You, sir, are a lucky fella. I used to have a pair of their predecessors, the 2075s and i have regretted selling them ever since i watched their new owner drive away with them. :tears:
As you say, the 2075s and 3090s are absolute monsters but they sound spectacular - the treble is a bit ragged at times on the 2075s but apparently the 3090s tweeter cured this - I would love to own a pair one day, but the few i have seen have been for sale at prices that are a bit out of my reach.

Thats what this guy (Simon) was saying about them also. The change to the electrostatic tweeter was a nice overall improvement. I don't own or have ever listened to the 2075 but I hope to be able to report on the 3090's in the next few days. I am going to put together a demo set up tonight or tomorrow. That will give me a better opportunity for some decent photos.

No teasin, They are still in the garage. I have been reconfiguring my main system for use with the Marchand and the L0-7T. I still didn't get that completed because of help child #2 with a little ACT review. Big test tomorrow AM! she is trying to go from a 24 to, well, higher so that she can get into the engineering/math program at the U. Dang, most of the stuff she was asking me about I have long forgot or never understood in the first place.

Got them set up today and thought I would follow up with some pics for the interested. I was just getting finished with the trial run when ejfud was pulling up to the house. They were sounding a little lacking in the highs when we started out, after some dial in they were coming around in that area but were showing promise.
It became evident that the L-pads (6 total) were going to need some re-work or at least a good deoxit bath. With no actual deoxit in house, I was forced to pull out the Rat Shack juice to use as a alternative. It seemed to work somewhat but I really think replacement is more in order.
Funny thing, they really started to come around the more music we fed them but the extended highs were still a little lacking but addressing the L-pad issue will fix that right up. Dialing the pads in was tough in this oxidized state but you could hit pionts of contact along the way and get what you were looking for.
They really seem to be getting better as they are played. Remarkable! We didn't have anything tube available tube to throw at these but Im looking forward to doing so.

Bass cab nudies as it were. We were getting sparatic connection and bass output on one of the cabs. We pulled the 13" woofer to check for any connection issues and found none but the problem was the original bannana connection at the head cab. Upon first look it appeared to be some kind of a funky grounding connection. I turned out to be a driver connection and not grounding afterall, This resolved the issue quickly.
Lots of **** going behind these (connection wise) If someone is interested it seeing it I will take some pics, If not we will just leave it at this.

Totally worthy looking speakers -- nice score. :thmbsp: Love to hear a pair of those. I have a large (but not as large as those!) pair of Leaks hiding around here somewhere; I think they are a very underrated brand, for sure.
Those woofers are the aluminum-sandwich variety, are they not? What are the surrounds made of? Looks like they are foam or rubber from here. The woofers in mine are of the now not-so-flexible cloth type, and I've not had a whole lot of luck in keeping them supple. Was considering trying foam, but didn't really want to try the cloth-to-foam replacement thing. If these drivers have it as a surround, though... :scratch2: Do you have a pic of the back of one of the woofers? They look nearly identical from the front.

The woofer surrounds were rubber, so should be set there. They are in what looks like a transmission-line cabinet.
When I left the highs were still lacking, but these speakers still had me thinking these could/would be something special with a little work. For how big they are, they did a wonderful job of hiding themselves soundwise in the room.

I'm not sure how to describe it exactly but these are getting better sounding as they run in. I left the speakers running upstairs while I was in the basement working on a few things. I could hear them upstairs (some Jack Johnson playing) and all of a sudden I realized that the tone was different. I came back up after a few minutes to find them actually doing highs. Two hours ago there was nothing much over say 14-15 Khz but now it seems like someone flipped a swich and we are actually getting something resembling a full range loudspeaker. The lows are more prominent also.
Might be something to do with the nature of Styro/Al sandwich cones and a 7-8 yr. absence of a signal or who knows what.
